Kirk Ferentz getting sued for being racist

I don’t think Ferentz knew. Several players have stated that they were not comfortable going to Ferentz to voice their concerns, and I know that some of this stuff was brought to black members of the leadership council, and even they didn’t bring it up to Ferentz. And it’s not like Doyle is going to voluntarily bring up some of the things he is accused of saying.

That in itself is an indictment on Ferentz and how he ran the program, that no one would feel comfortable bringing this stuff up to him personally, but I don’t think it is reason to fire him. I know they have taken steps over the last couple years to address the culture that made black players feel uncomfortable by loosening some of the restrictions, looking into why the attrition with black players was so high, hiring more black assistant coaches, etc. It’s clear that those moves weren’t a big enough step, and now this is going to force Kirk’s hand to make sure they do make the changes necessary.

Ultimately I think this will be a positive for the Iowa program. It will rid them of the one person that was almost universally cited as the source of the toxicity in Doyle, and it will allow Iowa to address the problems that needed to be addressed in a public and transparent manner.
So the one person universally cited as toxic is Doyle but the head coach makes players feel uncomfortable if they voice their concerns? Woof.

Possible. One thing is for sure. They are all huge ********. Already knew that about Brian Ferentz. No way I would let my son play there. The vast majority of NFL players didn't go to Iowa. Spare me the "they send you to the NFL" ********. A ton so programs send kids to the NFL that don't have dickhead bully racist coaches.
Especially since the Kaep kneeling stuff, it's become more obvious that most/all of the NFL operates like the Iowa program appears to. There's a reason people sometimes refer to it as the No Fun League. It could be that the "Iowa Culture" is part of what makes Iowa players attractive to NFL front offices. I'm not saying there haven't been very talented/deserving players, but given two guys of approximately equal talent you will use "program culture" as a tie-breaker.

So you think 20 years of creating a culture of racism and ONLY doing anything about it because they got caught finally is a positive for the program?

I think the issues coming to light are a positive for the players and for the program. Not sure how anyone could disagree with that, but I’m sure some will for no other reason than I’m the one posting it.

Never change...keep tilting at that windmill bud. You summarized it perfectly...he (Kirk) didn't change anything and it's only that the body was found when Kirk suddenly found religion. But then again, he can change...look at the Twitter changes in just a few days...let's forget about the past 20+ years.

Agreed. Should really help recruiting considering Ferentz is tying to keep Doyle

That's because KF is Barta's boss, not the other way around. You wonder why Barta wasn't fired when he had to pay off that lawsuit? Because KF didn't want him fired. When all the hawkeye fans are complaining about the nonconference FB schedule and playing ISU every year...it's because KF wants it that way. Has nothing to do with Barta. KF is the boss and I really doubt he even has to answer to the university president.[/QUOTE]

Not so sure about that part.

This isn't Remember the Titans......

I have no doubt the team will be stronger but I also think it will be a long time before some members of the team trust their coaches. Also take a look at the comments on twitter and facebook. Fans are complaining about kneeling etc. I wish it would be that easy for the team and players to move on but life is a little bit harder.

You literally posted that players are uncomfortable approaching their head coach. There's no positive way to spin that.

I think there are 24 programs that have more guys in the NFL right now than Iowa does. I doubt they have the same "culture" as Iowa. Maybe there are a couple, but probably not. Ferentz's connections had more to do with it IMO, than the NFL being like Iowa.

If KF was 10 years younger, then a sweeping change makes sense. Because he's as close to retirement as he is, nothing is going to happen. The stink is going to hover in the locker room until this staff is gone.

Haven't you guys heard? According to the twitter, Iowa is going to be the most united team to ever take the field!

So no Kirk 4.0?

It's no doubt a positive for the future of the program and for the future of it's players, but in my opinion, and a ton of other opinions outside the majority of Hawkeye Football fans, is that there needs to be accountability all around. An apology doesn't suffice. Letting players finally wear earrings, hats, hoodies, and tweet more than one time a month doesn't suffice. This is a serious issue that stems from multiple individuals within a football program run by Kirk. Kirk has yet to take any responsibility other than that he pledges to change. That's not how that works. This wasn't an isolated incident. This was systematic and allegations keep coming out every single day.
