Kirk Ferentz getting sued for being racist

I think that this Iowa situation is going to affect a lot of football programs and how they're individually run in a positive way. Coaches are going to use that as a good example of what not to do and how they can help encourage the conversations within the team.

The teams with older coaches may very well be the ones with the most issues also. I'm in my later 40s and know I'm kinda at a dividing point where racism wasn't just a given that you would be that way and things had started to change during my growing up. Those younger have had a more naturally diverse background generally, whereas those older than me had lived through a time where segregation was not seen as unnatural.

It's just another example of the need for checks and balances within an athletic department. I don't understand how many times we are going to see that you just can't give a HC total control. There has to be additional involvement. It's been well documented that Kirk was.... particular.... on how his program was going to be ran but there needs to transparency or at least oversight.

I don’t even know what that means. DJK threw a fit at practice and was told to stand on the sidelines. He kicked over a garbage can full of trash, so the coaches made him hold it the rest of practice. He then decided to try and be a jokester and started walking around with it on his head. How in any world is the Iowa staff the party that comes out looking bad in this story?
So because one story MIGHT be ok for KF, the rest are just garbage?

By all accounts, Doyle should be fired. The question then becomes whether or not Kirk deserves to be terminated as he allowed all of this to happen under his roof. His claim that he had no idea any of this was going on and claims he never once heard of any racial disparity is laughable. My opinion doesn't really matter, but to me, he deserves as much blame as Doyle. As the head coach you are responsible for every little piece of the program. If these problems happened a few times and Kirk addressed it with him, then Kirk would've been doing his job. Some of these accusations actually note that Kirk was very well aware of Doyle's behavior and further blamed players for not respecting Doyle.

That's what I'm hoping we find out with this whatever process that's happening. How many guys brought individual complaints straight to KF, how many incidents was KF there for to witness first hand, how did he address them, etc. A lot of the guys who've been leading the charge also have reiterated their respect and appreciation for KF. If they'd gone to him to complain about incidents of racial slurs and sat by while he did nothing, I'd think they'd be coming out with that right now. That said, yes the buck stops with him and when there's cracks in the program foundation this serious and deep, much of the fault lies with him.

When you have an incompetent AD to begin with, this sort of stuff starts to slip through the cracks over the years.

Pat Forde does a good job summarizing what I'm seeing (sorry if this has been shared already):

I especially thought this line was good:

A college athletic program cannot become a time capsule. It cannot become an ongoing shrine to its leader—even the good ones. It is perilous to let a coach build his own echo chamber, surrounded by the same faces and voices for two decades.

how ******* bad did that look then? How much ******* worse does it look now? Does anyone know who those players are that appear in that picture at that rally? What do they have to say?
I think they're purposely staying silent.

This is bad for everyone involved over there. Their PR department is gonna screw this up you watch, they are inept at handling much of anything.

KF will be fine. Doyle will be gone and I am guessing BF will get some sort of discipline.
I don't think Kirk's job is as secure as you believe it is. From what I'm being told, Iowa's trying to wrap their head around what the heck is happening right now.

From the outside it appears there has started to be a shift inside the program with all the newer younger and minority coaches the last couple of years. Wouldn't be surprised at all if guys like Bell and Copeland told guys that they should speak up when they had the chance. I am guessing KF didn't know everything that Doyle did but had heard some things but was blinded by his friendship with him. So instead of correcting him and making things better he just acted like it wasn't happening. I also believe there are a lot of people of a certain age that don't understand joking like that is not ok. I have a lot of people like that in my family that I constantly have to say things too. I think it was on Golic the other day where he said that Doyle was operating with 1970s software. I thought that was perfect.

An interesting thing to come of this so far though is that it appears to have really united the team and the former players that have spoken out. And as far as I know they are the first team to say they are going to kneel during the anthem this fall in college football.

Side note: I never understood why anyone would want BF as the next head coach there. Seems like a complete ******* and now we know he is. I think someone like Bell would be a much better choice.

I read that this morning. Absolutely was horrible to read. The disgusting part IMO was seeing all the people on twitter call Rob a piece of trash and that he wrote that to fit his narrative. What narrative does that dude even have right now against the hawks lol? Just the amount of people calling DJK a piece of garbage and a liar, it was sickening.

But now that this came out, it sort of makes you wonder if something was going on with AJE and maybe that's why he didn't play every snap his sophomore year.

From what I have read, I think it is and guys like Johnson and Daniels that were some of the first to speak out support him and still praise him.
