That literally makes no sense. But then again iowa doesn't really understand what a conference tournament is.
The data that I was using wasn't the same as his, so in reality the original numbers posted from the other person were correct in that Goodson averaged a little bit more against top-40 defenses per SP+ (not my metric). However, the original poster forgot to mention that Breece Hall only truly saw touches in one game out of the 5 games against SP+ top-40 defenses.
At least we had recent trophies in our case to give em. Augustana was probably pissed when the most recent thing to take was an NIT second place trophy.
What is SP+? In a single sentence, it's a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. I created the system at Football Outsiders in 2008, and as my experience with both college football and its stats has grown, I have made quite a few tweaks to the system. SP+ is intended to be predictive and forward-facing. That is important to remember. It is not a résumé ranking that gives credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling -- no good predictive system is. It is simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you're lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you're strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise.

I personally don't like these rankings considering how highly ranked offensively teams like Minny and Wisconsin are, but I also didn't choose the ranking in the first place so oh well.

Essentially, it evaluates a team’s efficiency on offense, defense, and special teams, while accounting for tempo and strength of opponent.
Maybe I am making this too simple but it seems like a KenPom equivalent, or close to, for football.
He's really good. we agree on that. Good news is that you'll probably only face him 1 more time. I'd put the over/under at 200 yds total.
Ok cool that still has nothing to do with what you said. I'm sure Iowa has lost to some bad teams before I mean didn't they lose to a DII school. I guess that team better leave with Iowa's almost NIT Championship Trophy.
So based on that, Hall played against the #22, 47, 48, 58, 68, 73, 83, 106, and 109 defenses, as well as UNI. I didn't include Iowa or TCU, he had one carry in each of those games for 2 total yards. So that's one top-40 defense he ran against, 17 rushes for 52 yards, 3.2 per carry. If you include Iowa and TCU, that's three top-40 defenses, 19 rushes for 54 yards, 2.8 per carry.
Goodson played the #10, 11, 14, 26, 27, 54, 60, 63, 77, 82, 84, and 117. I didn't include ISU, he had three carries for 16 yards. So that's five top-40 defenses he ran against, 43 rushes for 228 yards, 5.3 per carry. If you include ISU, that's six top-40 defenses, 46 carries for 244 yards, 5.3 per carry.
Correct. The Iowa State fans don’t like those stats, so they’ve been claiming that they don’t count or simply handing out “dislikes” and “disagrees” without engaging in any discussion. Business as usual.

That's just using the SP+ rankings, which I honestly don't know if that's the best metric or not.
Yes we've gone over this. Lol Breece Hall didn't start actually playing till after the TCU game. I mean I don't know what we're arguing about. The only people that think Goodson is better are Iowa fans. Breece was a freshman all american and is listed as one of the best backs in the nation coming back for next year.
Goodson had games against awful teams where he was irrelevant too, which shouldn't happen to a great back. He had like 6 carries for 8 yards against Purdue. Goodson also runs behind great offensive lineman, but we don't have to get into all of that.
I'm not arguing. Just using the rankings you provided to compare/contrast how each performed against the top defenses they faced. Nearly half the defenses Goodson went against were top-40 compared to 1 for Hall. And Goodson outgained Hall by 2 yards per carry against those top defenses.
Again, I have no idea if SP+ is the best metric to use.
