Garza declares for the NBA

Now take that team and add another year to pretty much everyone that contributed. Garza could put up better numbers next season with the big guys that are leaving around the conference.

Teske and Stevens are gone.

Jalen Smith and Oturu are looking like 1st round picks and most likely won't be back. Wesson has declared and sounds like he wont be back in Columbus.

Cockburn and Tillman have both declared and could come back, although Tillman is showing up at the back end of the 1st round on some mocks.

Haarms is leaving Purdue.

I'm not sure even with all the other centers leaving that Garza can put up better numbers than he did last year. Those other returning players are also want to get points, so they are not going to be thrilled about feeding the post every time down the floor, so Garza sets records.

Garza is just one of those players that is great in college, but does he have a future in the NBA, and if so, does another year in college really help him reach that goal? Or has he maxed out and that is as good as he gets?
Not ripping on the kid, he was great, but does coming back for anther year move him from 81st in the draft up to the first round?

He has nothing to gain by coming back? You mean other than cementing his legacy as the best player in Iowa history, winning the national player of the year, potentially leading Iowa to a Sweet Sixteen, etc.? If a team promises him a guaranteed contract, he’s gone. Anything less than that and he will be back, IMO.

You honestly believe Fran can lead a team to the Sweet 16? Lol cmon

I understand where your head space is at, because as Iowa State fans we've gone through similar situations, but Luka probably cares more about his NBA career than having a Sweet 16 appearance on his resume. He's already the best basketball player in Iowa history. That's not going to change by him coming back for a season in which he could end up getting injured and potentially have zero teams even consider signing him in the future.

Teams are intrigued by him and even though Frank and Luka are saying they won't take less than a roster spot, that could definitely change.

Yeah I mean there's always that option of Luka coming back, not putting up the same numbers, and Iowa loses in the first round of the tournament.

God no.

And is bigger, stronger, and more athletic, other than that A TOTAL WASH!
Brook Lopez in the draft after his Jr. year - 7'0" 260
Garza- 6'11" 265

But yeah Lopez was a lot bigger. And no Lopez did/does not possess much athleticism.

And keep in mind I did not say he would be close to as good as Lopez. I said If a big slow guy like Lopez can be an All Star with a long career and be a key factor late in his career for a great team, I think it is reasonable that Garza can find a role with a team.

I watch VERY little NBA but Garza kind of reminds me of Nick Collison in the last few years of his NBA career. I could see him being a steady role player with 10-15 minutes per game.

Exactly, imagine the numbers he will put up not having to go against those guys if he comes back (which I think he will).
But those teams are also recruiting and developing guys too. We have no idea how good of numbers are going to be next year based off of what those teams are losing. They will be gaining guys and guys will get better too. I would have told you I thought Luka would come back too, but there are teams that are saying they like him right now.. All it takes is one team to pull the trigger or give him guidance that he should not go back his senior year and he's likely gone.

Things are a little different for a player like Garza than guys who have left early recently like Tyler Cook, Wigginton, etc. Of course his main focus is going to be playing in the NBA, but Garza is in a position where he can become the leading scorer in Iowa basketball history, become the national player of the year, have his jersey number retired, etc. I don’t think he’s going to forgo that to sign a two-way contract and spend most of next year in the G League.

I don't even see Garza as a G-League prospect. He's either going to make an NBA roster or he's not and he'll play in Europe after next year. He is about as developed as he's going to get IMO unless there's a way for him to suddenly become a guy who runs a 4.7 40 and can somehow increase his vert above .75 inches.

It's possibility. We've all seen it happen before. I don't pretend that Garza coming back guarantees success. It just drastically increases the chances. It also does a lot for increasing the programs exposure nationally. I'm sure that part doesn't factor much into Garza's decision, and shouldn't, but it definitely is a byproduct if he comes back.

Whoa there. Don't you know he is developing a 33 foot set shot.

Lmao.. welcome to what isu fans have had to deal with for years and multiple stud players.

Iowa fans imo are reading way too much into Garza saying he needs guarantee spot on Roster.. He means with an organization and guarantee contract.

Garza doesn’t want to be Cook and I don’t blame him..

only thing 1st rd guarantees you is $$.. most 1st rd kids play a ton in G league first 1-2 years.

if Luka has teleconference with NBA GMs and says I’ll only stay in draft if I’m assured a Spot on nba bench he’s finished..not just this year but next. No player is guaranteed to make nba roster all season.

like Luka said in teleconference.. if he finds right fit and team who wants him and will sign him to a decent deal he’s prob gone.

He’s never going to be a 1st rd player.

Garza was just Runner up NPOY and he’s not on single 1st rd board. How he is viewed isn’t changing in 12 months. He’s also gonna be what 22 yrs old this year? Tic tic tic.

Welcome Iowa fans to what it might be like losing star player. Now imagine you don’t lose 1 you lose 2 in a single year. And Iowa fans wonder why isu was so bad.

No mention of Lurch leading the hoks to the national championship gives this post zero credibility.
