Okay, which brings me back to what I just said... what exactly are they waiting for that at least 76% of the rest of the country (per @Clonefan32) didn't see a reason to hold off on?
I don't know, maybe some of those other states have more strict measures than they need. Or, maybe Iowa SHOULD have a more strict shut down. We don't know. Different states that have taken fairly similar measures to each other are seeing different results. That tells me there are more factors at play than just the amount of businesses that have been shut down. That is certainly one factor though.

We probably all agree that something that works in Alaska wont work the same way in California, or New Jersey. So I don't buy the reasoning of "76% of states are doing it, so we have to do it too." Maybe we should, but not by that logic. If those states had proven results to look at at and we could say "hey, this worked", then it's logical to follow their example. No one has results yet though. The data we do have varies tremendously state by state. The number of new cases in Iowa does not appear to be increasing that quickly based on the last couple days. The past 3 days even show a flattening of the curve. I'm not buying into it yet, since it could just as easily jump up tomorrow and continue to increase. No one knows yet.

I'd be fine if the Governor and whoever is helping her make decisions decided we did need a more strict "stay at home" policy, or whatever that really means. I don't know if that is the best decision or not though. I definitely think mayors need to be given the power to make that call for their individual town/city. That makes more sense to me than a statewide shut down anyway.

I do watch the speeches, she said they are using their data and metrics to try and figure out the hot spots and see whether or not they need to issue more mandates for those areas. How can you look at those areas and think they don't need different measures taken? They realize the eastern side is worse, but it must not be bad enough in their eyes to change anything. Once it starts getting worse, you're already setting yourself up for failure.
This a million times she is already at this point 2 weeks behind taking stronger actions.

The state of Iowa has a higher population density than 14 states. 11 of of those 14 states are currently under some sort of SIP mandate.

I wouldn't want to be the first one to have to make this mandate but holy cow I would not want to be the last either and with every passing day, we're inching closer and closer to that becoming a reality.

Trends? why should we pay attention to trends!! or even a potential future trend!!.....................................

If Iowa is truly two weeks behind some of these states, then we shouldn't be treating this on a day by day basis. It doesn't really matter what we say at his point. If she's going to treat her data and metrics like the Bible and swear by it, then I'm just hoping she's right. If she's not right, then we're looking at a statewide catastrophe.

Is the governor dumb enough to believe that schools will be open again on April 30th?

Why not just announce now that they will not be open again this year? Anyone with half a brain knows schools won’t be open again this school year.

Listen to the whole thing. That date was put in there to facilitate and Expediate the E learning ramp up. They have to have a plan in and approved in about a week. If they decide to shutter and schools open at all then they need to make it up. They won’t reopen but it tries to put teeth and scare into those thinking of doing nothing.

Most of the schools up here have things about ready to roll online. It’s to push things to get online moving.

I'm as critical of her thought process as anyone, but I don't see the harm in preserving the option to return to school. It's clear to everyone by now that it's unlikely to happen and everyone should prepare for online-only learning for the rest of the year.

So they all say Voluntary. They continue as they are and nothing gets made up. Lebo made that way more wordy than it needed to be.
What I have heard is that we will try putting assignments up on google classroom, so many per week, for each class.
But here is the catch, we will not be grading the work, and if you do not do the work, just say, "I don't have internet connection at home" then they are excused from the work.
It will be a voluntary program for the students.
We are expected to hear more after our board meets tomorrow. The Iowa Ed. site has found recommended online materials that we may use for free.

So I guess I find the stuff, post it, and we go from there. That way they can say we are actually working from home.

No school is going to risk going back to the classroom this calendar year.

If you get approved by the state, you can grade them. I know our school is working towards that angle.

This dig in the heals crap happens all the time in government. Why you work the channels that will get the job accomplished the fastest, even if that means not standing in the spotlight. More gets done outside than inside.

I was hoping she would say we are in a stay at home. I don’t want the mayors to do it because the town I live in the mayor goes to extremes. He had the police tape off the parks when the schools closed. The other states say go to the parks and walk, just social distance.

All of the playgrounds in OH are taped off with police tape. Going to the park does not mean have a hundred kids on a playground.

The problem with grading them is what do you do to the kids that do not have access to stream the materials. We cannot give them a zero.
We were at the end of the 3rd quarter on our last day of work, so there would be no grades for this quarter in the JMC. That was to start Monday March 16th our first day off.

I get this feeling this is all for show, jumping through more state hoops, but after 30 years, I am jaded by the whole state of Iowa and the way we educate people. Love teaching, hate the required stuff from the state.

Playgrounds or parks. You can’t even walk in our parks. I understand playgrounds due to the disinfecting issue, but you can’t even walk in them.

For us it’s only possibly rural students, mediacom and others have given free WiFi to everyone and their schools computers will work. Around here it would be 1-2 per grade that you may need to figure things out for.

So what you're saying is even though it doesn't state the strategies implemented, it's still somewhat accurate because they are using our current numbers and these numbers are produced by our current strategies?
Yes exactly. If schools and businesses are closed, and while they're closed we're collecting data, then any projection based on that data is going to assume that conditions remain the same. If you want to simulate different conditions at different times, you have to manipulate the model so it's no longer just coming from the deaths/day data.

So 100s of people went to that horse auction in Iowa.

Here is a photo of said action, over 400 people had asked for number to bid.

My uncle had a livestock trucking company and my dad would truck for him at times. Said he was hired by the Amish a couple times. He would show up, they would climb into the bull rack and he would take off. Would ride with the animals on the way back also. Since the trailers didn’t possess a motor they could ride in that but not the tractor.
