You say this as if they weren't doing that behind the scenes and getting an inadequate response.

It isnt a 'political stunt' to demand the correct actions be taken, publicly if necessary. These are public officials, after all.

So you go the better route that will get more done, have the mayors openly do something if you want that to happen. Yes they are public officials and they are supposed to do things for the public good, they are doing it the wrong way to accomplish what they want. So at that point it’s a stunt.

School decisions as in whether or not they're going to reopen? I listened to the entire press conference but thought she was referring to something else..

No, it was something about how schools choose to implement online learning while closed.

So wait, you are using this metric to criticize a Governor of a state? You can agree that's a totally misleading figure, right? So if the Mayor of Des Moines put a SIL in place it would count towards your figure even though Governor Reynolds would have nothing to do with that?

Why not just say 38 states when you are talking about a statewide order? Well, I know why, because 45 sounds better...
Governor Reynolds has the power to grant the right to Mayors in Iowa to make that decision but isn't going to do it because she wants us all to be under one roof on these decisions.

That's the reason why. Mayors in Iowa, specifically the mayors for the counties that are being affected by this the most, want to issue a shelter in place but Reynolds flat out will not let them.

But we can agree saying "45 states have this order" when talking about whether a state Governor should do this when only 38 Governors have actually acted?

If a governor has acted to make sure that none of her state is on that list though, the governor has acted.

Who's going to tell him?

Oh please. Their job isnt to pledge fealty to the governor and have to worry that coming out publicly will hurt her fee fees.

If she's actually not doing something because people came out and shamed her for her inaction, she has no business being in her position.

So then of the 12 governors you were criticizing some are allowing local governments to make their own orders?

I would think she'd be glad to move the onus to local leaders. I will say that move does kind of surprise me.

This I totally agree with. I'd be glad for her to do this just so this stupid argument can go away and we can move on to criticizing business for being "essential". I do think it can probably be chalked up to stubbornness at this point.

You thought she would when those two morons tried to publicly shame her? I knew then that they made it worse. You don’t pull that crap publicly. Have the mayors send a letter and you will get somewhere if she would do it for anyone. No matter the party, a stunt like that from the opposing party will delay what you are asking for.

“Stunt”?

I assume they won't make any moves until they're told from higher powers to do so (and I'll leave it at that). I can't see any other logical reason for their inactivity.
@isutrevman What's the disagree? How does one simultaneously believe both that a SIP would do nothing different, but there's also a specific and logical reason why they wouldn't issue one?

Turns out only 76% of state governors have truly acted, instead of 90%. How misleading.

Nope it doesn't work like that. Some of those other states the mayors were already allowed to make decisions on their own and they did not need the governor's authority to call for a SIP.

Reynolds didn't even know at the beginning if Iowa mayors were allowed to make those calls! She said that if mayors deemed it necessary they could do so, but then she found out they didn't have that power and isn't going to allow them to receive that power. She has total control now.

This dig in the heals crap happens all the time in government. Why you work the channels that will get the job accomplished the fastest, even if that means not standing in the spotlight. More gets done outside than inside.

I was hoping she would say we are in a stay at home. I don’t want the mayors to do it because the town I live in the mayor goes to extremes. He had the police tape off the parks when the schools closed. The other states say go to the parks and walk, just social distance.
