I've resigned myself to the fact that Cousins is the QB for the foreseeable future. Without getting into his strengths and weaknesses, I just don't see the Vikings being able to do anything else from a practical standpoint. Their only bet is to get something in the draft. It's possible they'll strike gold in the latter rounds, but that's catching lightning in a bottle.

Not that I think he'll get them to high levels of success, but I think the Vikings top brass has said he's their guy and they are going to build a team that works well with his abilities. Again, not that I'm a huge Cousins fan, just the reality of the situation.
 
Cousin's deal makes me think the Cook will get the tag for 2 years and then dump him. Vikes window to win is now. If they aren't good next year, I want a full tear-down and rebuild.

Do something like the Dolphins did. Get 5 picks in the first 2 rounds.

I am guessing Cook would hold out under the franchise tag (following Zeke and Bell)
 
Yep, both of these moves are about winning this next year - though, I don't see that happening in a big way unless we somehow get some outstanding OLs & DTs (need CBs too). I really like Harris, but you can't spend that kind of $ on both safeties (or any position) unless your lines are set. Knew they'd extend Cousins - both Zimmer & Spielman's jobs are on the line - but it's not a good move. He is what he is - seems to be a good guy with an excellent arm & accuracy, but he's not a leader &, when the pressure's on, he's a deer in headlights... simply no feel in the pocket... numb...the OL has struggled but Cousins contributes to their issues, doesn't help them by sliding/scrambling. This also means they need to extend Cook for a few years too, as Cousins can't operate w/o him.

I like having Harris because they are losing experienced CBs however bad they were. But like you, I'm skeptical these moves result in a much better team. Generally once you hit the cap like this, you better have the vast majority of your positions set and the Viking are going backwards. It doesn't provide a ton of hope. My wildass guess is that once Cousins extension is over, the team will have to look at a tear down.
 
I'm over Diggs. Great teammate and great talent when things are going well. But if he's not getting the ball he is a bad teammate and makes it all about him.

If the Vikings do trade Diggs, I am just going to assume they get some really good value from a really good player on a really cheap contract.

Based on watching the Vikings these last several years, I've come to the conclusion that there are a few key rules for developing a great team:
1) Have a QB & OL that are collectively elite (or, very good, if D is elite) - a great one like Brady, Wilson, Mahomes can cover up deficiencies; having a QB like Cousins requires that much of a better OL
2) A great DL is requirement #1 for a great D
3) Don't sign multiple, big contracts at other positions unless #s 1 & 2 are taken care of (Vikes have spent big on WRs & LBs, and now Ss) - obviously, having a great, young QB on his 1st contract helps for a few years and can delay the onset of this rule (see Seattle under Wilson's 1st deal - or KC now)

So, this causes me to question the re-upping of Cousins and signing Harris. And, I really like Harris, but we need a stud DT and/or OL much more. Cousins' extension gained more $ for this year, but it just delayed the inevitable, unless we somehow immediately strike it rich on multiple linemen in the draft, which would be a rare thing for any NFL team. Cousins can only be elite if he's not under any pressure.

Not a chance. Even if the Vikings wanted to, the large number of receivers in the draft will push down demand.
