The infamous holding call

We didn't really score a lot of TDs last year, either. Lot of games under 30 points, most in the 2-3 TD range. We scored 2 on Saturday.

I don't see any meaningful regression from Brock yet this season, in fact, I think his ability to read defenses and get the ball out quickly (and safely) has improved already. We have much greater areas to fix than him and who's around him (like special teams and not killing ourselves with penalties).
Through the first 4 games last year, our offense looked immensely worse. Think about it, the game against OU we put up 27 points, however two of those TD's came on miraculous TD's to Hakeem where he broke multiple tackles to score. In the Akron game, we only scored 26 points and they weren't very good. And then there was the TCU game where we put up 198 total yards.. I think our offense looks fine right now and it's literally only a few things we need to work on and those points will start rolling in.

There aren't a lot of opportunities to do that against a team like Iowa, who frequently leaves safeties over the top in cover. Our scheme to get the ball out quickly doesn't really lend itself to longball 1-on-1's, either.

I sure hope so. Going into the game, I wanted to see if ISU was a 9-10 win team or a 7-8 win team. Leaving the game, I was tempered back to a 7-8 win team.

That is what I am saying. ISU offense is a better version of what Fitz runs at NW. But I am getting crushed for that thought.

Also, if you think we did it to go away from epenesa, the second time we tried it it was a short field on his side when the WR slipped.

It did not work though did it? Did he blow up the play? no, but it did not work either.......dumb reference there.

The passer slipped on the wet turf. Epenesa has nothing to do with it just like the rest of the plays. Our back up center botched a lot of snaps and that slowed many plays up, added an extra half to full second for the Dline to get in there. How many times did Iowa sack Purdy?

Funny you mention that, I was talking to my brother a couple weeks ago about what it takes to beat Iowa. He said to watch tape of Northwestern and do exactly that: short/quick offense, spread the field, and get a lot of guys involved in the offense.

Well, that's pretty much what we did. We didn't lose because our offense sucked. The formula is there, and we ran it well I thought. That said, we aren't an elite team until we clean up other areas. Less penalties (especially at critical points) and no more ST f***ups, to start with. It would also be greatly beneficial if we found ways to generate more turnovers in general. We could've had two picks Saturday, but left with zero. Until these things start going our way, we're closer to 7 wins than 10.

My apologies, I thought you were referencing the defensive side of the ball. I agree Wirfs and maybe Linderbaum are our best players this year all around.

Linderbaum has really been impressive. I went back and looked at the QB sneak for a TD and he pancaked Lima five yards into the endzone. Extremely impressive for a freshman to do that against such a stout DT.

I agree and he is a good QB, but he does not trust his WRs like he did Butler to just throw it up to him one on one.

Purdy definitely is good. But he made some pretty critical mistakes at key moments. You also could add an INT to his stat line if Koerner didn't wisely bat the 4th down pass to the ground and forego the pick.

I'm still puzzled by that play. Iowa wasn't even close to him and he just threw it right to Koerner about 10 yards over the head of his intended target that was double teamed. Couple that with the over throw to Kolar in the back of the end zone and maybe he isn't as clutch as KF thinks he is.

Purdy came out and said he thought Deshaunte was going deep and there was miscommunication. And yes he did miss on a couple plays but also made some big ones. Can't be perfect.

Oh I agree. He played a really good game, and that is what made those two throws puzzling to me.

1 Time, ISU sacked Stanley 2 times. I think Iowa also got Purdy on a 2 yard loss for a TFL run play. So really, not much of a difference, maybe it was because the field was wet?

The play that could've been picked off was on 4th down and he had to do something with it.. The game wasn't going to be won or lost on that play. He played a great game but the entire offense needs to clean some things up.

The one to Kolar he sailed it, but the one to Deshaunte doesn't worry me. It was 4th down and he had to make some sort of throw.
