Here’s the thing. Something could have happened worthy of this level of attention. I don’t know. I wasn’t there. It’s certainly within the realm of possibility given the rivalry, the events of the day, the way the game played out that someone(s) took things too far. It’s entirely plausible.

However, this is the Iowa AD’s third trip to this well with ISU, and the first two were ********. There have been prior issues with Iowa and other schools, also ********. If the incident warranted rising to the AD, there were specifics. The press release is amateurish and vague. If the goal is to besmirch ISU, vague the allows endless possibilities of pure speculation.

So, given their track record and treatment of this so far, unless they can come out with something concrete, I’m going to have to assume they’re simply crying wolf once again.

I’m willing to wager this evaporates into the either and nothing more comes from The Iowa AD on the matter.

What Barta did, through some combination of malice and sheer stupidity, is to draw a ton of attention to something for which the facts aren't known. He's elevated what might be an isolated issue into the appearance of an institutional failure and hindered the ability of Pollard and his staff to investigate this because now media relations adds another layer of complexity.

Going public in the way he did immediately politicizes the issue. Not in the electoral politics sense, but that it's going to split people into opposing camps who will believe whatever makes their side look good or the other side look bad. That generally isn't conducive to an unbiased arrival at the truth.

This isn't to say that this should never become public. But were Barta operating in good faith, he could have waited until the investigation was complete. Or he could have issued a joint statement with Pollard. Either option would have given Barta more credibility given his own sketchy history. But he wanted the "gotcha."

It can't be repeated enough: Barta was in such a rush to embarrass ISU that he couldn't even be bothered to spell his own job title correctly.

I serves the purpose of making allegations to demean ISU and many times that is what people remember. Remember when he sent a letter to the big XII ADs about the break in in the locker rooms and it turned out to be an Iowa student and a failure by Iowa coaches to lock and the same security staff as Iowa uses. He wants to make allegations and have them stick.

I fully agree with you that it should have been handled and then announced, but I disagree on the purpose. He is getting the purpose that he wants.
