RECRUITING INSIDER: Gunnerson intel

Can't remember the website---something something sports network, but it ranked Alabama as better in football than ISU, and THEN it said Duke has a better history in basketball...

...so I'm really not sure what's going to happen next.

East coast media bias! They should make those guys pass a test before assigning ISU anything but greatest in the universe.

I'm disappointed that as good as CMC has been, and as much a priority as they have given in getting out to the local HS is the state, that we will leave this recruiting cycle with none of the top 5 in Iowa committed to the Cyclones. We have reported offers to all of them as well. Iowa got 4 of the 5 and now Nebraska has the other.

How many losses does that mean for us this season? My god - if we can't get the top kids in Iowa - who I think are all ranked below the other players who have committed to play at ISU -there is no hope.

How many Iowa kids on the roster now? How many Iowa kids playing meaningful snaps now?

Lots. And that's just neat.

I was hoping our in state perception would start to change, and kids in state would see the opportunity for success outside of Iowa City or out of state. I don't see that happening in this class.

We cooled on Gavin Williams and we are always going to struggle pulling kids form the eastern side of the state. I think we might be over estimating the quality of Iowa high school football...

Also... Ohio pipeline > Iowa

If ISU landed the top 5 instate kids in the 2020 class they would currently be the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th highest ranked prospects in the ISU class.

Do you think CMC offered them because he didn't want them? Just courtesy offers I guess? Jones and Gunnerson have better ratings than all but 2 of our recruits, so we could have used them. I think Miyan Williams is a great pickup but Gavin Williams still has a slightly higher rating and plays 30 miles from Ames. He also had a reported offer from us.

While Campbell has been great finding other options his actions suggest he understands the importance of being a top option in state. This year we haven't been. I wanted Gunnerson because it made sense, he is a great prospect whose best days are ahead of him, and it gets us a highly sought after local kid. There was no downside.

WIll it break the program? No, but I think it will need to change in the long term to keep building up what is going on in Ames. I have seen early success flatline and disappear as coaches get into the ISU HC job. Changing perspectives in your back yard makes recruiting easier and betters one of the biggest challenges at ISU. Getting the kids.

We just got potentially the best rb in the state of OHIO! There are/were no hard feelings with Gunnerson from our staff. His coach used to be on Iowa State's staff. Sometimes a kid make a decision we dont like, some of you guys need to get over it.

And when it's all said and done he will be rated higher that Gavin who has the privilege of running behind the best o-line in Iowa 4A football...

Get the best players that want to be part of the program regardless of where they live. ISU has surpassed UI in attendance so that should say we're either really easy to get into or ISU is THE university of choice in the state of Iowa.

Every coach misses on way over 50% of the kids they want. BG wanted his own experience and I think that's cool.

I'd really like all the top Iowa kids to come to ISU but it didn't happen this year. But it has in recent years past I believe? So I guess we'll just have to settle with ISU being the first choice of many, many top athletes in the mid-west and continue to play the long game by winning games with character, top-notch coaching and player development.

Although ISU blew passed UI in enrollment several years ago, ISU has ALWAYS enrolled more Iowa high school graduates and more Iowa community college transfer students than UI. In other words, ISU has ALWAYS been the #1 choice of Iowa students since the beginning of time.

If it weren't for Illinois students, UI would probably be battling UNI for the second largest Regent university.

That perception won’t change until CMC can beat Iowa.
