Iowa set the stage for all of this when they decided to forget about educating Iowa kids and doubled down taking as many out of Illinois students as they could. UI gets to charge them out of state tuition, plus the state for some reason gives Iowa more money per student than it does UNI or ISU. ISU went the other way, wanted to become the school that educates kids from Iowa.
Well guess what has happened, the students from out of state that went to Iowa, left the state when they were finished with school, and the ISU students stayed in larger numbers. ISU made Des Moines a primary area to draw fans from.
Drive around the Northern and Western sides of Des Moines, and you see as many ISU colors as Iowa colors. Lot more ISU license plates out on the road than ever before. Iowa fans are now in denial. Their fan base is older and passing away, while the ISU fanbase is a younger crowd, Pollard has made great choices about getting young families into the game, not over charging people and has created a fun family atmosphere.
