Five Guys Coming to Ames

You are saving $5-8 by going to B-Bops. A 1/2 burger meal with cheese ( what kind of burger place makes you pay extra for cheese?) is $8-9. A burger at 5 guys with fries is $10-11. I'll take the freshly grilled ground beef patty over a frozen meat patty for 2 dollars more any day of the week.

Literally every restaurant.

Here's my opinion of Five Guys:

For a burger place, I really like it.

Burger: Very good if you get the "small" single patty burger. I am a believer that often a burger's greatness is dependent on its ingredient ratio. With the "regular" five guys burger you get way too much patty and thus the full flavor is overpowered and you don't get a complimentary construction of ingredients to create a nice well-round hamburger. I have tried the regular burger and did not like it. Not only was it too large but was not what I would call "flavor complimentary".

Fries: I really only like the fries if they are cajun style. I like the cajun style season and like dipping them in ketchup. Plain is just a pretty grease plain fry to me that isn't crispy. For me, if a fry isn't crispy than it has to have some spices to make up for it. Also, small is plenty as previously mentioned in this thread.

Shakes: Never had them because I'm a cheapskate and have never heard that Five Guys had good shakes so I never felt it was worth it to even try.

In conclusion. I like the fresh ingredients, especially with the burger, but can only recommend the small burger and small cajun fries. I absolutely prefer this place to McDs or BK, but fills a different need for me than B-Bops. When you crave some B-Bops nothing can fulfill that but B-bops.

Cheese doesn't just grow on trees!
Dr. Seuss begs to differ.

If you can read it's clear as day on their menu board.

Uh, negative.

Do they explain to you "Our regular = a normal extra large", "Our small = a normal large", "Don't get an order of fries per person"?
Do they explain to you - "Most places, fast food or sit down, ordering a meal comes with a burger and a side and that burger and side are sized for one person, but our burger is sized for 2-3 people and so are our sides?"

When I went, they didn't. You have to figure it out on your own or go with someone who already knows. No, it's not hard to figure out. But I don't want to have to "figure out" a menu at a fast casual restaurant. Give me a #1 combo that comes with a burger and fries portion that's sized for me to eat by myself and you can charge me $10-12 for it, that's fine as long as it's good. Don't tell me I've got to know to order a small and can't really order fries for just myself, etc.

Does Five Guys still serve peanuts and let you throw the shells on the floor? Its been a long time since I've been to one.

I still can’t believe people are talking about $5-$10. It’s fast food. My god.

It makes sense why Iowans love gas station food so much. Cheap Mofos.

Iowans will talk about the portion size when you ask about a place.

Not how good the food is, but how much you get. The value not the taste.

Try it with tenderloins. "It was bigger than the plate!"

Yeah, I don't get why people wouldn't want to over pay for greasy garbage, when you can get just as good, if not better tasting garbage at a cheaper price. Especially when you're paying for 4 or 5 people. Yeah, stupid a@@ Iowans.

So as long as the greasy garbage is cheap, that’s fine?

If it’s bad, it’s bad. Price shouldn’t matter.

Buy meat at Hy-vee and other accessories and take 20 minutes (maybe) to cook it without leaving home for way less.

If people are eating at these places because of specifics that they can't get at home, they need to reestablish their priorities.

It's really not that difficult.

Does anyone know the timeline for the Grand extension? They’ve been talking about it for 20 years.
