Chizik on hot seat?

I definately agree with your first point.

IMO the only way GC leaves our program is after back to back New Year's Day bowls, Mack Brown decides to retire.

Definitely.

You all do realize that misspelled words have a red underline in the editor, right?

I'm up for giving Chiz 4 years. If his 4th year is mediocre but promising OR BETTER - he gets #5. If it's good or better, he gets #5 & #6.

In year #5 if he's going to bowls, running a clean program, and lovin' Ames... I can see a very unique Fennelley-esque type contract. Why not? Have him solid in the program and have a 10-12 year commitment to it. Not a Ferentz contract, a contract with some unique stuff - like assistant pay way above normal and such, and giving Chizik Carver Hall for his kids to rollerblade in.

Before Mac - we tried the "new coach every 3-5 years" thing and it didn't work. I know we're Big Time Big 12 and all - but it'd great to have a senior FB Coach again - who aspires and achieves more than Mac and still sticks around.

We owe the guy 4+ years to make it in Ames, barring any unforeseen stuff. Hotseat = "off" until 2010 or later.

I think Chizik's going to have to do more than just get to bowls. McCarney took us to 5 bowls in 6 years and still got canned by a demanding fan base that said it wasn't enough anymore. I'm not saying Chizik has to go in and win the Big XII North every year - he may not even need to win it once. If the guy's winning 8, 9, 10 games a year, getting to decent bowl games, and with that still doesn't get to the Big XII championship game, he'll still be fine. But if he can only win 6-7 games every year at best, you can guarantee in 4-5 years he'll have to deal with a very upset fan base, even if he's making it to bowl games on a yearly basis. Like I said, it wouldn't be any different than what McCarney was doing.

I don't think that anyone is going to get fired going to bowls every year at ISU. What hurt McCarney wasn't the string of mediocre bowls and a fanbase wanting better, it was TERRIBLE years in 2003 and 2006 where the Clones were stomped on by every Big XII team they played (minus the goodbye Mac Mizzou game). Add that to choking away two outright North championships and feeling was that Mac had peaked and couldn't get it done.

If Chizik goes 6-6 or 7-5 for the next five years in a row, there will be some grumbling from fans who want the next level, but rest assured his job will not be in jeopardy.

Here's why Chizik should not be on any sort of hot seat until after at least after his sixth year at ISU (disclaimer - I know you all have heard enough about KU in the past couple weeks, but here's one more post):
Mark Mangino's record - years 1-6
Year All Big 12
2002 2-10 0-8 / 6th North
2003 6-7 3-5 / t4th North
2004 4-7 2-6 / t5th North
2005 7-5 3-5 / 5th North
2006 6-6 3-5 / 4th North
2007 12-1 7-1 / t1st North

Here's where the similarities start:
- In his first, fourth, and fifth years at KU, Mangino played a South rotation of Texas, OU, and Texas Tech
- In years two, three, and six, he played OSU, aTm, and BU.
- Both were among the highest regarded assistants in the country and regarded as more than ready to start their own programs.

You forgot to include that Mangino went bowling in his second year. Most people like to leave that out. He also went bowling in year 4 and had the record to go bowling in year 5. It isn't like he caught llightning in a bottle. He built the program up.

Hot Seat...Hot Seat??? You must be on drugs or on some chemical dependent whatever to think that any coach would be on the HOT SEAT after what...17 games???

No way boys!! Chizik has 4 years left after this season on his contract just let Gene have at it ...and see how it plays out.

After his 5th year he still is struggling...then and only then do you do the obvious and let Gene Chizik go!!

You have to give the guy a fair chance to succeed at ISU!!....The only person who wants to see Gene succeed more than me ..is Gene Chizik!!!

If Chiz were to equal what Mac did as coach, Chiz would be hear longer for the simple fact he doesn't "spin" everything.

He's a straight shooter and that means alot in my book.

I agree with you in regards to Gene Chizik...But when it comes to Dan McCarney...I think what killed him was the losses to Mizzou and Kansas that threw 2 north championships right down the drain!!

After that the fanbase had no use for Mac and I dont blame them ...we should have had two championship game appearances and if that happens to Chizik he will be in trouble with the fanbase also!!! Nuthin worse than coming close and not being able to close the deal!!

To be on the hot seat I think you have to take the pulse of the fanbase. If I am not mistaken the vast majority of the fanbase is extremely pleased with the teams progress so far. Sites like that just go on records and they don't actually look inside each program to really see what is going on. Anyone who thinks he is on the hot seat is out of their mind.

Not to bash Mac, but in reality, he took us to 5 bowls in 12 years. and this is the big difference between Mac and Chizik, imo. Chizik won't get 6 years to get us to a bowl game. If by year 5, we haven't been to a bowl I believe there will be complete anarchy in our fanbase. I really think Chizik came in here with a lot more expectations than what Mac started with. Mac was able to beat Iowa, that gave him the couple of extra years he needed to get us into a bowl. That's not going to be good enough for us anymore. And I'm pretty sure that's the way Chizik feels as well.

Level of success seems to always come down to W/L in the end, but there is a whole process and atmosphere that is often overlooked. Anyone who can't see the beginnings of something good here, starting with this team, is blind. I mean...this team has the most hard fought losses I have seen. Sure there have been mistakes...but a young team and coaching staff is going to make those. Anyone who thought that we were going to turn around on a dime after a coaching change was nuts. I'm happy I've seen as much progress as I have...and there is still a lot of football left to be played this season (hello, Big 12 play...).

Chizik is proving to be a disciplined and intense head coach, and very much in control. Personally, I am absolutely THRILLED that he is here, and I can only hope he stays for a longer than your prescribed "5-6" years!! :notworthy:

Also looking at that website...Ron Prince seems to be in more of a hot-seat situtation right now...so the fact they have him in "edge of hot seat" I am completely discrediting the authors and the poorly created website!

If you were commenting on my post. I completely agree with you. I've been saying all along that it seems I'm watching a real football program being built here. Really, I have no fear of Chizik ever being on the hot seat hear. For one, I just don't see us not going to a Bowl game next year. The improvement from last year to this year is amazing. Give us half of that for next year and we'll be a force to reckon with.

This is a silly thing, that only exists in the land of message boards.

Coach Chizik will get the length of his contract to get this thing going. Jamie Pollard has too much invested in his success to not give him that long.

As far as longevity goes, unless something truly special happens (multiple BCS appearances, and top ten finishes), then I think that coaches have a shelf life of at most 8 years. Look at the schools that are "institutions" there are really only a handful, less than ten.

Look across the state at UI. All of the downward trend happened after year 6. It just seems that people tend to get too comfortable. Same with Coach McCarney, whatever you want to say about his coaching ability (and the fact that the best jobs he could get were position coaching jobs speaks volumes), 2002 was the beginning of the end for him, and that was his 8th year. You can bring up 2004-2005, but I think that had more to do with the weakness of the North, than anything else, and the wheels fell off in 2006.

It is the job of the AD to hire the right guys. IF Coach Chizik wins big, enjoy the heck out of it. Accept the fact that, if this happens, he will be in demand. If he leaves, wish him well, and count of the AD to make the next hire.

Just be glad our coach is not #2 right now...

I think he's should be in the safe for now category, anyone here in the midwest knows he's going to be given some time. And they predict a 5-7 record which how can he be listed that high then if that is improvement from 3-9 a year ago for someone that is in the second year of his first head coaching job?

Ron Prince who in the eyes of the public is on the hot seat is given a little too much credit on this like I think.

Why do people read this stuff, to put it nicely, and why post it on a great web-site. And NO I did not read or check it out.

One never knows with Pollard as AD. He fires coaches with winning records, but he won't fire the ones he's hired - that would look bad on his resume.
