I guess Iowa's collapse will start in March this year...

Fran is a genius.

He's a 50 yr old coach making 500k at Siena and he managed to get Iowa to make him a rich man and fund his retirement. He's locked into Iowa for at least the next 4 years where he'll coach both of his sons, and doesn't have anything to worry about contract wise - he's getting raises to max out at $3m a year and he'll be 64 when it expires.

I'd bet at the end of this season (I figure 5-7 big 10 wins) he'll be forced to fire most of his staff as a way of saving face.
I never understood his staff. He’s got two short fat dudes on his bench who look like they should be selling hot dogs in lower Manhattan. No wonder he can’t recruit worth a damn and honestly it’s probably why Iowa sucks. His assistants are awful.

Fran leaves on his own and leaves that money on the table? Are you nuts?

You think Barta will pay him 8 million to go away either? Iowa is between a rock and a hard place on this one unless they miraculously turn things around this year and contend for a tournament spot.

Next year is going to be rough with Cook leaving so this year is a make or break year for him. If they fall apart ad only win 5 or 6 conference games again and their defense continues to look this bad something will have to give in the next couple years.

Isn't the 3 point specialist who sucked at making 3's Oglesby still a grad assistant?

But who will hold him back when he goes FranCon 1?

The next 4 or 5 years could be pretty bleak for Iowa basketball. They've already shown signs in their 2 road games this year that they could spiral out of control and end up with a 4 win season again.

Things could get really ugly next year without Cook, kind of like last year when they all thought they would be way better without Jok. They have no good recruits coming in except Patrick and hes been dropping in the rankings every year of high school. Connor doesnt do much of anything except dribble around and talk smack. Weiskamp is going to be the only talented player they have for the foreseeable future.

They are either going to have to start winning basketball games or something will have to happen. No way he makes it 4 more years like this, their fanbase is already turning on him.

Yes; good memory. I was at the UT game and, if memory is correct, at one point we were down 30! This is the B8 Champ team down by 30! The wheels def started to fall off the bus. But most disturbing to me was what I witnessed from our Coach at a downtown Austin club after the game.

That's Barta's problem not Fran's. He mocked the media when they brought if his seat was warm. He truly thinks he's doing a good job

Fran's buyout is just shy of $8 million after the 2019-2020 season. Doesn't even seem like that is something possible for Iowa to consider with another poor season next year.

Steve Alford's buyout at UCLA was $3.6 million this past week.
Is there any precedent for paying a buyout close to $8 million to a college basketball coach that anyone is aware of?
I have a feeling he won't get fired or leave until Patrick graduates.

Good gosh almighty I wish we had beat these buffoons.

Take a look at the SRS column here...

They have demonstrably declined as a program since the 2014 or so range.

Seems like every 2-3 years they have a "line change" in the main contributors to their program, which is like any other college basketball program. That is not really the problem.

The problem is every new "generation" is worse than the last.

Marble, White, Gesell, etc. >

Uthoff, Jok, Clemens, etc. >

Cooke, Bohannon, Garza, etc.

And yes, I know this is an approximation. These generations intersect and bleed into one another.

The "rebound" so far this season is modest and could reverse itself if they are outclassed night after night in Big Ten play. I have no idea how they got themselves up to #14.
