I guess Iowa's collapse will start in March this year...

Cook acknowledged afterward that he should have figured out how to best attack the Purdue defense in the first half.

“I’ve got to do a better job of kind of picking and choosing my spots in the first half. Being more patient in terms of waiting till I get the looks that I want,” he said. “I think I did a great job of that in the second half, individually. But it doesn’t matter much because we didn’t come out with the win.”

He talks like he has more than one move to choose from.

Anybody see Dailey last night right before half? He threw up a shot with 6 seconds left that had no chance and Purdue went down and scored an easy basket.

Unreal you make it to this level of basketball and you don't understand the concept of not letting the other team have the ball back before half. I've never seen anything like that before.

"dribbles into a double team with his head down.... Gawwwwd."

i just can't get enough of fran's stubbornness. he really thinks he can get these under the radar, lower ranked recruits, and win in the big 10.

He doesn't have any other choice. In 9 years he's managed to recruit one decent out of state kid to Iowa City. He thinks he can get away with building a Big 10 winner with just Iowa high school players.

The talent he's pulling now from Iowa high schools isnt anywhere close to what it was 4 or 5 years ago when he had Gessell, Woodbury, Jok, and Uthoff fall right into his hands.

I guess i could see that but I'm not sure....I know that's the "mad Fran" perception but by all accounts he's pretty laid back in practice....his players like him. Not a whole lot of turnover/transfers. When there are transfers it's usually PT related....

I think it's simply X's and O's...holding players accountable. Holding players to a standard and creating an identity for the team. I have no idea what he's trying to accomplish on the defensive end....what identity he's trying to instill.

One thing I'll say about Prohm....it seems it's "his way or the highway".....he holds his players accountable. A very talented player like Lard runs afoul....well, he has to work his way back into Prohm's good graces. That's a good thing.....seen it with other players.

Just think there are a lot of misconceptions with Fran....his issues aren't that he's being too hard on the players.

Probably said too much here :)
Deterhawk.....I will take heat for saying this on these boards but you seem a reasonable, humble, realistic Hok fan on this thread.....the exception to the rule(typical fans) that creates the animosity even when the two teams don't play each other.

Fran's buyout is just shy of $8 million after the 2019-2020 season. Doesn't even seem like that is something possible for Iowa to consider with another poor season next year.

Steve Alford's buyout at UCLA was $3.6 million this past week.
Is there any precedent for paying a buyout close to $8 million to a college basketball coach that anyone is aware of?

Yes, he got in a players face 5 years ago. Must mean he does that on a regular basis.
Plenty of things to bash Fran about and I have my beef's...this aspect is way overblown IMO.

I will admit that his court-side demeanor had been surprisingly calm this year. I attribute that to the fact they have been winning. Lets see how calm Fran is when he is 1-6 in conference play. "Mad Fran" is still in there somewhere.

My conspiracy theory is buried in his contract extension is a clause that mandates he take 3 Xanax before every game.

Technically Gesell doesn't fit. He was from South Sioux City which is across the border in Nebraska.

I actually agree with this. Fran seems to have a very good relationship with his players. His on the court demeanor to refs and opposing teams is obliviously lacking and borderline offensive. Many assume he is the same to his players but we would see transfers and reports if he acted that way 24-7 to his team.

The issue is Fran and the the players may be too loyal and recruiting misses. Fran has recruited flawed mid major type players up and down the roster and instead of recruiting over them to fix the weaknesses he keeps them for 4 years plays them crunch minutes believing he can scheme/develop them to hide the flaws. It is fine in the non-con when the playing the mid majors and teams that are unfamiliar with EIU abilities but once he hit league play and P5 coaches have the players to expose the weaknesses leading to the January/February swoon and poor B10 tourney record. Appears to be happening yet another year with 0-3 in the big 10.
That's fair...

Also, Is there any precedent for getting a multi year extension and getting fired in a 12 month period? That would have to be some kind of record.

Cougill flunked out or was asked not to come back. Point is, the players that grew up Hawkeyes aren't going to transfer out. No matter how bad things get. This is their dream.
Apparently Gatens threatened to Transfer out which was one of the nails in the Lick coffin. Anyway, I'll concede a Iowa kid is much less likely to transfer than an out of state kid.

Absolutely.
Most of that roster thinks they’ve made it while walking around Iowa City talking to Tavernhawk offspring about playing in Hilton next year.

Fran and Barta are an embarrassment. I cannot believe they have stuck themselves in that spot. An $8M buyout for that guy? Holy ****, Barta must have slept with frans wife or something. There is no other explanation.
