Fant is going pro

I'm pretty sure if Iowa was playing in a national playoff game that Fant would be playing. Same if Iowa State was with Montgomery/Butler. But other bowl games are meaningless and to subject yourself to injury, both with the game and the additional practice when you're not coming back is stupid. I see exactly why these guys that are projected 1st rounders do it.

Its all relative. Whats a game comparable to the Outback Bowl? Alamo?

So if we made the Alamo bowl this year(which would be one of the biggest bowl games weve ever been in) you would be absolutely fine with Montgomery and Butler sitting out the game?

I don't know what I'd do personally. What I can tell you is a majority of first round picks dont sit out, so there is stronger evidence to backup my opinion than the rest of you guys that disagree with me.
You are right that the majority do not sit out, but the number that are sitting out is certainly increasing. It would make for an interesting case study...I would think the rate would be highest for high draft picks in meaningless bowl games and lowest for players in the playoff games and for those wanting to boost their draft profiles.

It's meaningless whether or not Fant plays, catching 1 or 2 passes and looking like the 2nd best TE on the team isn't going to raise his draft stock. This might be the one case where a guy is sitting out because he won't get a chance to showcase his talents anyway. He honestly should have just shut it down a month a go.

Yes. These guys don't owe me (or any of us) a damn thing. They need to do whats right for them and their families. If they feel not subjecting their bodies to the rigors of a 13th game is the right thing then that's fine by me.

Why would the top 1st rounders on Alabama want to risk injury for college playoff games? Are they getting paid in these playoff games? What if they get hurt and they don't get drafted? They should think of themselves. They don't owe their teammates anything. I think most of the Alabama 1st/2nd rounders should just sit out. Heck, sit out the Georgia game. If their goal is to make millions in the NFL, who gives a **** about an SEC title? Same with Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame. Why are their studs risking their careers for stupid college games?

you know, I think any player interested in getting drafted this year should just sit out bowl season.

I can't believe those guys who play in the All Star games. What are they thinking? They could get hurt.

crazy world. crazy world.

Solid rant but by your logic guys that are going to get drafted in the first round shouldnt even play at all. So I guess my point is where does it end? Now guys are going to sit out an entire season while still on scholarship because they might get hurt? Guys now projected in the 6th round decide that a practice team contract is too valuable for them to risk getting hurt?

Your logic here is flawed because if somebody chose not the play the entire season, either 1.) they should already be in the draft, or 2.) they would have to have historic levels of talent for drafters to be okay with that. Almost nobody is going to be able to do that, and that's where your "slippery slope" argument completely falls apart.

To address your scenario of a 6th round guy says a practice team contract is too valuable. That would assume that said person believes that that truly is their ceiling, and they don't want to try for a better draft position. And honestly, a practice team contract is far more valuable than playing in 1 game at the end of the season.

You know where it ends? If the NCAA has a problem with it, then they can pay up. Problem solved.

You GTFO with this weak attitude. I played competitive sports my entire life and in college, not once did I even think about missing a game or letting me teammates down. If you are so scared of getting hurt every play might as well take up another activity.

This machoism is severely misplaced. Congrats on playing sports, I played sports too, BFD. Clearly you were not a high-level pro prospect, so don't act like you know from experience.

Whoa

“We are disappointed Noah will not be finishing the season with his teammates,” said Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.

For those saying it's a glorified exhibition, wouldn't the players benefit from boosting their stats further and also from the additional exposure of playing in a nationally televised bowl game? I can see why they do it, but especially in bowl games it is a chance to go against new schemes, unknown opponents, etc. I would think that would be worth something.
I think any benefit is outweighed by the risk. There's oodles of film on these guys and I don't think the 1 extra game would add much....and you run the risk of getting injured in a game that really doesn't mean anything.

The only time a guy with a 1st round game should contemplate playing is the CFP.....every bowl game is meaningless for a guy in that situation.

Oh, idk, maybe honor their scholarship and not sell out on teammates because you are so scared of getting hurt? Seriously, grow up, this exactly what people talk about when they are talking about the snowflake generation.

You think guys 20, even 10 years ago were just deciding not to play when they were perfectly healthy because there is a chance to get hurt? This reminds me of the Noland thread when I called him out, then everyone got all triggered saying he might get hurt so he just quit in the middle of the season.

Snowflake = someone protecting themselves so they can get paid millions?

Good to know

*raises hand*

Because playing for a National title probably matters to these guys a little more than the "prestige" of playing in the Holiday Bowl?

The Nebraska game last weekend was meaningless as well by the same logic... you were already bowl eligible and win did nothing for you... so why did he play last week? Where do you draw the line? Clearly his motivation to play was to get drafted - not for his team and teammates... so if thats the case he was already a projected 1st round pick should have sat out the whole year.

Not a fan of this continuing.

Prior to Butt's injury, he was projected to be picked near the top of the second round, which would have grossed about $4 million in guaranteed money. As the first pick in the fifth round, Butt will receive about $380,000 in guaranteed money.

Jake Butt likely would have carried a first-round grade had he not suffered a torn right ACL in Michigan's bowl game in January.

With the $543,000 of tax-free insurance money equated to about $900,000 that is taxed, that means the Orange Bowl injury cost Butt around $2.8 million.

Yeah but think of how much fun he had playing with his teammates!

Bad look for KF to say he's disappointed in Fant considering what Butt just lost out on
