UNLV Comments

is there a video of what LJ did anywhere? I am curious, as i havent actually seen what went down.

There's a YouTube video of it that doesn't show it very well at all. Search for "Leonard Johnson late hit UNLV."

LJ laid out the qb after he had scored and was about 10 yards deep in the end zone. He deserved the 15 yd penalty and benching considering he had an earlier unsportsmanlike call. It was inexcusable , malicious, and a dumb decision but I think some people on this board are over reacting to the play.

edit: here it is [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSM7wd5d-jk"]YouTube - Leonard Johnson's Late Hit vs UNLV[/ame]

LJ hit was plain nasty. I was ashamed to be sitting in the stands and associated with that.

UNLV fans are horrible. I can handle verbal abuse, but one of my friends had UNLV fans with their hand on him.

UNLV had about 15,000 fans actually at the game. Their band music was played through the PA system via a microphone by them, so people could hear it. It's kind of embarrassing to lose to a program where there is so little local interest for the program. But give the team credit...they just outplayed us in the first half and made the play to win the game.

what LJ did was dumb, i do not think it was intentional (i do not know for a fact) but my thought would be it was unintentional

There is no way it was unintentional. He had plenty of time to pull up and not hit the quarterback.

Not that it matters much in the grand scheme of things.... but the endzone is only 10 yards deep total. The hit was 3 yards into the endzone. And yes, it was a stupid move and inexcusable.

i agree with your comments about over reacting. what i think is funny is you have the NFL where "adults" act like ididots and that is now becoming a problem in the NCAA.

what i mean is the dancing and taunting after every play, i do not mind it after really important or big plays but after every play. i think that helps to fuel the "anger" if you will and causing these young men to do dumb things.

what LJ did was dumb, i do not think it was intentional (i do not know for a fact) but my thought would be it was unintentional and let's let Coach handle it. I guarantee his "punishment" is far beyond we could ever think of.

Plenty of their players -- especially Summers -- liked to pose and point to their chest after a big play. Not enough to draw a flag, but it really irked me.

There was a play in the fourth quarter when Jesse Smith had a big sack on Clayton when we really needed it. Instead of posing and stomping and screaming, he calmly stood up and walked back to the defensive huddle. I sure liked that a whole lot more than the "look at the sweet play I just made" mentality.

To the original poster:

There is not ONE fan of UNLV that would justify the actions of Sanford after the first ISU game. Not one. We've got no beef with ISU; we act like that for every game. I'm not justifying the actions UNLV fans, but to say it's because of Sanfords actions two years ago is laughable.

You want to see a real throw down; fly in for next weeks game vs. Reno. That game causes some real problems.

Crappy tailgating, horrible fans, ususally worthless product on the field, bad coach, horrible game atmosphere.

Thats 15,000 UNLV fans who are stupid enough to pay to watch that crap. The smart ones stay home.

I think this is something that is all over college and pro football today. I think it's dumb how when a player gets a tackle, sack, big hit, or any other routine play in a game he stands up and pounds his chest and does some sort of celebration. To me, all you did was do what you were SUPPOSED to do. Yay, you tackled him...well, that's your job! I know they have the right to celebrate, but it takes away from the team aspect, in my mind.

Seems to me the coach isn't that bad, nor is the product.

And those that paid to watch certainly got their money's worth.

But - I guess in some ways - ripping on the team that just beat us does decrease the pain.

I am trying to figure out what the youtube video doesn't show? Did the youtube poster edit it to make it not look bad enough for you? I see a UNLV player running for a TD, then LJ laying his butt out about 5 yards deep in the endzone and thats what happened.

My opinion: I loved the hit.

It looks like your boy LJ let the thugs of UNLV get the best of him when he lowered himself to their level and put the endzone hit on that guy. By a UNLV fan's own admission (above post) this team is nothing but a bunch of trash talking classless thugs... hopefully your AD will never schedule them again. Problem solved.

Good luck against KU, should be closer than people think.

I am in no way defending Johnson here, so please don't kill the messenger, but the replay does not show the WR blocking him grabbing his facemask and yanking it down before Clayton got in the endzone.

I'm not saying that's an excuse for the hit, but LJ was getting it pretty good from Flair as well. It's his responsibility to handle it like a man and deliver solid hits that are legal. Both of his PF's were in retaliation.

Oh, I'm sorry, did you see it live, too? Because that is the angle I'm talking about, thanks.

My opinion: Congratulations for you.
