Camp battles

Major difference now is the coaching staff. To me, this is a level of coaching we haven’t seen for generations.
Absolutey. Not since Majors's and then Bruce's staffs in the '70's. These guys are outstanding.

I think he’s great, but I’ve also never saw Iowa State receivers get this wide open. I’ve really only been watching ISU since the cyclones years and most years it’s been a struggle to compete a 7 yarder. I think a real test for Kempt would be if Butler ever had to miss some time.

I think the Cyclone nickname started in the 1890's . . .

So you're a youngster, eh??? :D

Objectively, Seneca and Sage were better QBs.
They went on to have success in the NFL after great careers at ISU so they should certainly be in anyone's top 3. Seneca was the best athlete and could really throw well on the run. But at 5'10" he wasn't always able to see the open receiver. Sage had a great senior year but never beat any teams that were ranked. Plus 2 of his wins came against bad Iowa and Colorado teams.

Kempt's decision-making puts him at the top. He knows where to throw the ball to give the receiver a chance. He keeps his cool even when the game is on the line. He takes what the defenses give him, and consequently, ISU went from a horrible 3rd down team under Park to a great 3rd down team all in the same season.

I say you have to go with how they preformed for us. Using playing in the NFL isn't always the best. You have David Archer, who even though he was a 2 year NFL starter, I wouldn't say he was a great quarterback at any level. He knew where tracy henderson was and would just get it in his direction.

Do you mean “the last three home games”?

Because someone made a good point about the restrictions of a travel squad. Not much room for true freshmen who aren’t already on the two deep.

And otherwise, I couldn’t see him not giving a bunch of freshmen mopup time in a blowout win over Iowa.

*For that matter, I’d LOVE to see him give a bunch of freshmen PT late in a comfortable win at home over OU. Should that actually happen somehow, how could he resist?

That's a good point on the travel roster. The only TRFR that actually travel would probably be the ones in the two-deep. I would guess that most will still have a game available for a bowl game. I wonder if there are travel size limitations for bowls...guessing not.

You just described Kempt also. Many of his throws last year were horrible and Lazard made him look great. Should definitely be the starter, but the best in the last 35 years is ridiculous.

Exactly what I was going to reply. Kempt did an awesome job last year, was a great manager and did throw some really nice passes, but Lazard made a lot of circus catches last year. Don't know if anyone else is as capable of doing that. We will see.

Seneca had underrated WR's, not physically as imposing as the guys Kempt gets to throw to but Whitver, Danielson, Montgomery and Young were a really good group. Not to mention solid RB's as well. I think Kempt has more talent around him but the biggest asset he has is a better coaching staff. Seneca was handed the ball and expected to go win the game, the current staff does an amazing job setting KK up for success.

Isn't it Jack Whitver who takes partial credit for "the run" by not getting open and forcing Seneca to scramble?

Kempt has put on what 15-20 lbs? He says he's worked hard this offseason to improve his arm strength. That coupled with an improved offensive line and more tailback and tight end options should put him in a great position to succeed. I think big things are ahead and only if KK gets hurt does he not start all the games.

Has anyone heard anything about Josh Jonhson? Wide receiver room seems pretty crowded, but he's been relatively quiet after red shirting last year.

I've heard this guy is one of the best route runners we have. Problem is he's just buried on the depth chart at that position. Behind Jones, I can see Milton and Johnson splitting some reps.
