Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

Fran at least has a couple Top 50 finishes in the recruiting rankings....CMC, not so much.

So not only mentioning football in a basketball thread, you are now comparing a basketball coach's recruiting to football coach's recruiting. God, you are really hard up for come backs these days. You find some of that Iowa ditch stuff again? Because you really are grasping these days. You started the day off poorly with your post, your downward spiral can only continue.

For Suggs a lot will depend on which sport he wants to play in college and if he wants to play both. For some reason, I just have this feeling he sticks with only basketball in college.

Good point, Suggs is already on record that he is fully aware for long term benefits of a career in Basketball over Football. His family and him have debated pulling him out of FB last year realizing his future is bright in MBB but he likes playing QB so he is risking the contact. He's a very good QB but a great BB player and he won't be able to play both in college. He may take visits to ISU Iowa and KU as a football recruit to get extra visits but I think everyone involves believe he'll chose his school on Basketball merits.

Is Suggs 2020? He may not even make it to college.

Yeah, 2020. I have read recently that 2022 might be the year they start letting kids go straight to NBA again. He has recently said that part of his decision for college might be what sport he feels has the best pro potential for him based on feedback etc.

Just to back up my thoughts on Iowa as not a major player for Suggs I just came across an article from an non-Iowa Rival's reporter and thought it was relevant.

https://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/summer-jam-whose-gotta-have-em-

Jalen Suggs
Whose gotta have him? Minnesota

Why? Minnesota hasn't had the best success in keeping true blue chip hoops prospects home and there hasn't been another homegrown player that Richard Pitino hasn't had more time to show love to. He can play the one or the two, he's tough as nails and Gophers fans would go wild if he stayed home. At the very least, they can't let him leave for another Big Ten program.

The competition: Baylor, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Xavier, Marquette, Georgia Tech, UCLA, UNLV, Wake Forest and more."

To be clear I don't think Jalen will end up at ISU or Iowa, just their media pumping up Fran's pursuit is going to end poorly. Especially when they aren't considered by a non-local media to be real enough to name as competition.

I don’t think Iowa actually has a realistic chance to get Suggs. However, I have seen interviews with Suggs where he has brought up Iowa as one of the schools recruiting him the hardest, one of the schools he is most interested in, etc. Ultimately he is probably going to end up at a blue blood, but Iowa probably has at least as good (if not better) of a chance than any team listed in that article.

I believe he said that Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State were recruiting him the hardest in both sports. And of those three, Iowa has the worst chance of landing him. Plus, once KU, Duke, UNC offer he gone.

Great use of resources Fran

I haven’t seen anything recently, but earlier this spring there was an article where Suggs stated Iowa is “easily” the school recruiting him the hardest, for both football and basketball. Again, I’m not saying Iowa is the favorite or anything, but they have as good a chance as anybody not named Duke, Kansas, UNC, etc.

You think it's smart for Fran to recruit Suggs hard instead of someone he could realistically land?

The statement that Lassie said was for football and basketball. Not hard to be the only school where the football and basketball coach both called.

There was a more recent article than that that mentioned Minnesota and Ohio State. Ohio State is better in both sports and Minnesota is his home state. In addition, he is a dual threat QB and Iowa basketball isn't good right now. So agree to disagree on Iowa's chances.

Agree. All it takes is one of these guys to change the perception and trajectory of Iowa’s basketball program.
Yep, Iowa fans have been saying that for 9 years...eventually even a blind squirrel finds a nut. You do have that going for you. Now, the squirrel still has to do something with the nut...not too sure we ever get past that step.

What do you suggest? Iowa was one of the first schools in on Suggs, and the coaches have built a great relationship with him. Should they just stop recruiting him now that he is a 5* prospect? It is entirely possible to go after Suggs hard and a realistic second option hard (like that 2020 PG from the Chicago area- forget his name). Whether Fran is capable of pulling it off is another story.

Yep. That's what ISU did with Sexton and ended up getting Wigginton. Drake was the first school to go after Zion Griffin and even got the first visit, should they have still recruited him after ISU and Kansas got involved? It's common sense

You couldn’t even pull that off with an instate riser like Carton. How are you going to do it with an out of state, out of the gate 5 star (and not just a 5 star possibly THE five star).
