Is Fran building a regional powerhouse or just calling Iowa fans idiots and morons?

His recruiting strategy literally makes no sense

It’s easy to bash on the hawks but when he made that comment about not wanting to take a grad transfer for 2018 because he didn’t want to tie up a scholarship for 2019, that’s when i knew he had no idea what it took to recruit effectively for a P5 program.

I saw he said something about having 5 "bigs" that can score.

He should change his name to Coach Bygoneera.

He's visited Iowa a couple dozen times or so, but has never taken an official visit to Ohio State, yet he cuts Iowa and keeps Ohio State on his final 3. That has to really hurt Fran's feelings, doesn't it?

That’s the problem, you want to keep recruits away from Fran.

I love all of the "He wasn't that good anyway" talk. Do the people who say that actually believe it? Are they just so far up their own asses that they can't see how ridiculous that sounds?
If I ever drink so much Kool aid regarding Iowa State, that I'm rationalizing a 5 star athlete not picking us with talk that he/she isn't very good anyway, someone please PM me and give me a reality check.

I’m sure his school will be crushed about the impending Tavernhawk boycott.

Just an interesting tidbit, because in the light of this most recent recruiting fail, many Hok fans are having a debate over Fran's accomplishments as head coach. Hearing about that one time that they were ranked #3 in the country as a reference point for how good Fran can be. It's a debatable point, and I won't delve into it, but it made me wonder about the times Fran has had them ranked during his tenure.

The long and short ofoit is that Fran's only had Iowa ranked in the final AP poll once, and that was when they finished 25th. Now, that's not the end all-be all when it comes to measuring success, but it's definitely one measurement.

I guess I don't know exactly what Fran supporters are so desperate to cling to with him. Unless the hawk definition of success is a lot lower than I thought it was, then he's been average at best during his time.

I see a lot of “he’s recruited pretty well with many 4 stars and look at Aaron White, Dev Marble, Peter Jok for player development”

They seem to completely ignore the actual results on the court. Who cares if you developed an Aaron a white if he goes to one tournament in his whole career. He wasn’t developed enough to matter.

Ssssshhhh that. Time for Fran to get another extension for missing out on that five star. As we know from Iowa Football thread, recruiting top running back prospects is not a priority, Fran just applying that to point guards.

Matt Bain has the inside info on the EIU coaches plan after Carton eliminated them and not surprisingly they are just fine at PG. ;)

"Inside the offices of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the sting was felt. Missing out on D.J. Carton hurts.
But the Iowa men's basketball coaches aren't scrambling.
They've got a catalog of names for 2019, and, according to sources with direct knowledge, they never viewed this class thinking they had to land a point guard. It just so happened that one of the very best ones in the country lived about a half-hour away.

So there was a need, but not a "glaring" need.

Coaches already have two point guards they like in Jordan Bohannon and Connor McCaffery. One is a proven Big Ten player who has two more seasons of play left and one essentially redshirted his freshman season.
The Hawkeyes' biggest goal for this class was to find guys they identified difference-makers — at any position. Obviously, Bettendorf's Carton was one of those guys.
Now, in the always-crucial recruiting month of July, Fran McCaffery and his staff will focus on two main goals:
First, they'll show lots of love to the remaining big-ticket difference-makers they've had high on their board.
Second, they'll continue to evaluate 2019 prospects they haven't offered. There are a few guys, in particular, Iowa wants to watch during July's evaluation periods to see if they've made the necessary progress to earn an offer. "

Unless 247 got their information directly from Xavier or his father, I think I will trust the intel I have received on this one.

The last person I would question in basketball recruiting is Jerry Meyer and it's been reported by more than one unbiased person that Xavier's dad has a strong relationship with Prohm
