Graham Couch: Iowa Basketball is a mid-major roster

It amazes me you guys don't understand you can't win if you don't play defense. You think last year would have taught you that but apparently not
You do realize ISU's D kind of sucked last year right? Not as bad as the Hawks but bad...

Wasn't on the same planet as how bad you guys were and we have some dudes coming in this year but you already knew that
I think ISU's D problems were lack of communication/poor team D....not necessarily personnel issues...

Folks place a bit too much emphasis on individual shortcomings when it comes to defense IMO when most of the time it's more team related....late on rotations, poor communication etc...

The Hawks just played poor fundamental team D....plus the individual limitations.

The Athletic's rundown on Cook in the draft. Lol

Projected draft slot: second round to undrafted

Key stats: 15.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.8 APG, 56.6/14.3/66.1

Comment: Cook is an interesting player with a lot of skill. He’s bouncy — especially for his size — and has good touch around the basket. But it’s hard to find a good player nationally who has been more misused than Cook was last year. He played nearly one-third of his minutes next to two true centers despite his best position also being at center. As the rest of the basketball world downsized, Iowa decided to play three true bigs fairly regularly and then give Fran McCaffery a contract extension. Go figure. Despite the fact that he should be playing most of his minutes as a true center, Cook still produced. It would be interesting to see him in a more functional situation, and Cook alluded to the potential for a transfer at the end of the season (although he has since squashed a rumored move to Missouri). He’ll get workouts, and if he was to stay in the draft, he’d be an interesting two-way contract candidate as well as a likely training camp look. But his stock is not where it should be right now after the dysfunctional Iowa season.

No particular reason, just wanted it on this page.

Well I tend to agree with this Bohannon being so bad really limits what Fran can do defensively. You can only hide him so much and when people blow by him it really puts everyone else in a bad spot

That's a lot.

And they won't be this year?
They werent the year they were freshman. They have guys being put in the right places now that Connor and Weiskamp are around maybe even Frederick. Baer, Nunge, Pemsl wont have to play the 3. Weiskamp will play that. Bohannon can play more off ball with Connor. Moss will be mixed in at the SG spot.

You realize Connor was going to redshirt last year and Christian Williams was going to play instead and Christian Williams ended up transferring to an bad mid major program right?

Yes, this was because he was going to focus on baseball if I remember correctly.

Williams would have spelled Bohannon some and flashed at times to be a decent player. Him transferring really weirded up the cycle of Connor. So then Connor is pushed up and needs to play and then gets hurt. So no depth for the guards and freaking Ellingson was the backup PG to go along with Dailey. Dailey is a SG/SF and Ellingson was a simple role player.

Neither did good. Williams was gone and our season was lost so why bring back Connor to play 2 weeks when he would get an extra season if he continued sitting because of injury?

Roster is more stable right now. Would be nice to add another guard but Fran says it is good to go.

Moss, Dailey, Frederick, Bohannon, Connor at the 2 guard spots is a better solution than

Moss, Dailey, Ellingson, Bohannon in 2017-2018. I also think it was reported that Bohannon played through some sort of injury this year. With his hip or foot or something like that. Talk about no depth on a team that needed something.

To be fair, it hasn't happened for anyone under Fran yet.
White, Uthoff, Gesell, Marble.... People have imporved and became darn good players under Fran. 1 bad year and everyone forgets he has had some good come out of the program.

Don't you think it's probably not a great sign about Connor's abilities if Fran was going to play a guy that was bad like Williams ahead of him all of last season?
