Iowa Football Recruiting

Footwork and quickness are two things that you either have or you don't. Sure you can make some improvements by getting rid of bad weight and adding good weight but a lot of it is natural ability. Good technique and strength can mask some of those flaws but it depends on the type of player they are lining up against.

I agree, that is pretty much exactly what I said. None of the things BC listed were inherent natural abilities though. Leverage, hand placement, footwork, and technique in general can all be improved.

We know the reason Kirk didn't offer Meeker and JGJ was because of poor evaluation but does anyone know why he didn't offer Vance? That kid is going to be special

LOL at if you recall correctly. You know more about Iowa than anyone. They certainly recruit academic risks as well. But it was an almost certainty that Vance would not qualify at one point.

So we took a commitment from a kid we expected not to qualify? Interesting

That hasn't stopped them before. They just had to send a DT to JUCO because he didn't qualify IIRC

This DT that was sent to Iowa Western, Daviyon Nixon, did qualify out of high school. The problem was he wasn’t cleared until he had already enrolled and started practicing at Iowa Western. He is already back at Iowa after only one semester at Iowa Western. If he didn’t qualify out of HS, he would have had to graduated JUCO to move on.

And talk about special, Nixon could be. Alabama committed a recruiting violation by contacting him while he was at Iowa Western. If the best program in the country is willing to break the rules to try and recruit a kid, he must be really good.

So why didn't Iowa recruit Vance? I think that's going to be one Kirk regrets

I know I shouldn’t engage the troll here, but I know OV well and, as I already said, there was concern about eligibility. No one doubted skill.

“Numerous schools, though, didn’t want that risk. Aside from Iowa State, Vance said a number of colleges believed he wouldn’t qualify academically — thus, end up in junior college. So they either backed off or avoided kicking the tires altogether.”

Sounds like CMC was the smart one here
