Iowa Football Recruiting

To be fair, this is what almost every high school player says about highly recruited players they compete against. I remember playing against guys like Seth Tuttle, Marcus Paige, even Harrison Barnes- and every time, some teammate would be talking afterwards about how they weren’t that good. Tough to tell whether it’s warranted criticism or just sour grapes/jealousy.
Played against Mike Busch (ISU TE) in 1984 when he played for North Scott...

Anyway, he torched us. Big, fast...can't remember how many receiving yards he ended up with but it was a lot.

Anyway, we had the "he's not that good" conversation going after the game...definitely sour grapes.

Yes, we played against Horner a couple times in a summer league and we did the same. And most of us were Iowa fans.

They said this before they committed. Playoffs and heard they had these two huge twins. Played them the next year after they committed and said they hadn’t improved.

Local HS team played the paulsens team. Players said they weren’t good, just big and there was a better lineman on their team.

I know a football coach up in the same area and he was very unimpressed with the Paulsens. Slow and soft was how he described them. FWIW he isn't crazy about Elijah Miller either. He had a really tough time this year slowing down quick undersized DE's. I don't find that super concerning for Iowa though because he isn't going to be blocking 6'0" 215 lb DE's in college...

The coaches got told the same thing in their scouting. Slow feet, just slant the lineman to a gap and they couldn’t turn fast enough to block. The players said they had a very solid center and they had problems with him. Hadn’t heard if he went anywhere.

Im guessing you mean Ezra Miller.

Weren't the Paulsens pretty much a package deal?
Ezra MIller looks like a good one.

Yeah...my bad. I don't disagree, he is going to be a good one. I was just passing on that he has struggled against smaller guys but again like i said above...

I think with the Paulsen's it's warranted. Still can't believe KF took them over JGJ and Meeker. No wonder @YeahBuddy complained about how bad your OL was last year for Brian

I am guessing there are a lot of lineman that struggle in small high schools and probably mainly to do with a lack of coaching, i.e. the coach not really knowing how to teach proper technique.

I agree to a certain extent. If you are a D1 prospect and you don't look dominant play class A or 1A Iowa football that is probably a red flag though.

Saw one of his games on Hudl, iirc his school run some old 1950s no gaps, basically wedge together and try to deceive you on ball direction and pop a quick hitter. Hard to even get a feel for how someone performs.

He won OL MVP at The Opening out in San Francisco last month.

Could be. I certainly have no idea how to scout d1 football players besides the obvious ones.

Linemen it comes down to footwork, hip use, handwork, leverage positioning and things like this. Have a buddy that is the same size as Osemele but all these things were weak for him. It’s like with backs can either have field vision or they don’t, something you do or don’t have. Not really teachable things.

I’m confused by what you’re trying to say here. Hand placement and use of leverage are technical things that can absolutely be improved with coaching. Foot speed and overall athleticism can be improved, but obviously to a much lesser degree. Not sure that any of those things you listed are innate gifts that cannot be taught.

Leverage is definitely something that you don’t just coach. You can improve the hips and placements of some but for those that it’s natural for, you just can’t match it with any amount of coaching.

If you think you can just coach anything, you are off.

Footwork and quickness are two things that you either have or you don't. Sure you can make some improvements by getting rid of bad weight and adding good weight but a lot of it is natural ability. Good technique and strength can mask some of those flaws but it depends on the type of player they are lining up against.
