It's time for the Hyvee Classic to die

We need to partner with Drake to make sure the NCAA’s keep coming back to DSM every 3-4 years with Drake as the host. If that means giving them a home game sellout at Knapp Center or splitting a gate with them at WF every year I’m fine with that.

That's ********. We don't need to do Drake any favors in regards to the NCAA tournament. We saved their ass by actually agreeing to host 2 years ago. Drake and Des Moines had tried to get the NCAA tournament before and it took Iowa State to get it done. As far as I am concerned, we are finished hosting. Drake can host, Iowa can host, UNI can host, and the Missouri Valley can host.

Are we really benefiting/hurting by playing UNI or Drake? I think its time for us to move on and set up home and home with someone else like U-MN, Wisco, Marquette, or Nebby?

Nebraska would gain any program less than playing UNI. Worst basketball program in college basketball history in a state that doesn't produce much talent. Ben Jacobson has single handedly done more in basketball than Nebraska has in 100+ years.

Minn, Wisc, Missouri or Marquette would be great, we don't need to drop UNI to do it though. We shouldn't play @UNI every other year though. 2 for 1, home games or neutral events.

If the option is a home and home with Drake then obviously that is a bit of a lost scheduling opportunity the years you play at Drake and could have a better road game with a chance to get a better opponent win at home.

I think Minnesota knows a long term home and home with ISU would be bad for their recruiting and that they'd come out of it with a losing record. Marquette would probably sour on the idea given about 20% of their players were transferring to ISU for a while.

I think part of it going forward needs to be that ISU and Iowa can get the TV under their normal TV options every year. It's the every other year we aren't the "home" team when we end up with bad TV.

There's a good chance we're on ESPN2 or U if this were considered an ISU home game. Anyone correct me if they know I'm wrong.

Iowa got on BTN because it's their game this year. I assume we're MC22 because it's not our game this year?

As of the last renewal, Iowa owns the TV rights for the Iowa game and Iowa State owns the TV rights for the Iowa State game. UNIs previous AD gave away everything. If UNI had any control over TV it would have been, at worst, Panther Sports Network which is several over the air stations across the state plus ESPN3, NBC Sports Chicago and Spectrum Sports Kansas City.

We're all aware Drake wasn't able to get the NCAA tournament by themselves. That's why we need to help them. Unless you don't want the chance at home games for the first two rounds?

Not sure how we saved their ass by agreeing to host. We applied to be able to host, with the idea that if we proved Des Moines could handle the tourney, Drake/MVC may be able to host in the future. It is absolutely in our best interest that Drake be able to host.

I'll never understand why The Valley's bid to host in Des Moines was rejected.

The Valley has hosted First/Second Rounds in St Louis, Kansas City and Wichita. Men's Regionals in St Louis and Omaha. Women's Regionals in St Louis and Des Moines. Two Men's Final Fours and Two Women's Final Fours.

That doesn't even include co-hosting Wrestling. A Women's Volleyball Final Four in Kansas City and a Volleyball regional before they moved back to campus sites. The Valley should have been granted the bid, but, you know, NCAA...

Nobody wants to play in Hilton. We have to pay teams to do it or force them through some affiliation.

It’s a 15k plus giant garage with seats. Good sound for concerts, able to change from a b-ball court to a hockey rink in like an hour and it’s in downtown. It’s what it needs to be. Charm is for college campuses.

The Sprint Center has some aesthetic charm but it’s just a bigger WF once you get inside just like all multi-use urban arenas of that vintage.
I've only changed over a few arenas from BB to hockey, but this is something I have to see. I have my doubts.

I think it was more a matter of timing. For instance, I think holding the NCAA Wrestling tournament helped whomever made the following bid. And Des Moines really stepped up its game to prove that it was committed and ready to handle all the extra things that the NCAA expects (hotels, shuttles, media spots, green M&Ms).
