It's time for the Hyvee Classic to die

I really gotta give it up for Pemsl for being such a warrior. Word from hawk fans was that he shattered his tibia (and then separated his shoulder and tore every muscle in his shoulder and it actually fell off, his arm fell off his body, after that vicious shove by that bully of a fan in the stands) and to come back from such an injury in such a short time is truly remarkable

I understand they took him back to the hospital in IC as soon as the game was over.

Never been to WF and I understand the Barn was old and something bigger was needed but WF doesn't look like a place with any kind of character or charm.

Seriously needed to give your opinion on an arena you've never been to?

I haven't been to too many arenas, and I'm certainly not an astute arena connoisseur, but WF seems pretty nice to me. It has some great views of the city from inside.

It’s a 15k plus giant garage with seats. Good sound for concerts, able to change from a b-ball court to a hockey rink in like an hour and it’s in downtown. It’s what it needs to be. Charm is for college campuses.

The Sprint Center has some aesthetic charm but it’s just a bigger WF once you get inside just like all multi-use urban arenas of that vintage.

That's cool...I knew it was close to some quasi interesting spots in DM.

Yeah I'm not saying it doesn't have a purpose.

People get territorial QUICK some times.

iirc, UNC does those home & homes as a recruiting tool. They had a player from the area; playing here gave his family a chance to see him play a college game, and gave ol' Roy the poacher another toehold in Iowa.

They could have come up to Hilton . That would have been fun

I didn’t read the entire thread, but I’d be all for this going away. I think a home-away-home-neutral format would be great for playing uni though. Gives UNI something but not having to play in cf every other year. I’m not a fan of ever playing drake in the Knapp Center but would be ok with games in Ames and Wells Fargo.

So was North Carolina, an actual elite program?

I'm like 95 percent sure that North Carolina took that home and away series specifically to let Marcus Page get a chance to play a game in his home state. Pretty sure Roy Williams actually said that at the time.

True, it does have some great views of the city from the inside. So what? I get to see the Des Moines skyline while I'm waiting in line for the men's room!

Seriously, has no one commented on how they are women's bathrooms everywhere with no lines, but only a few men's and all with long lines.

Being able to convert it into a hockey arena is the problem. It means that the ends are built for hockey sightlines, not basketball. Tons of wasted space right behind the baskets. Even the corners are way behind the baskets. And the front of the balcony on the ends is set so far back.

...prevents a good look at their ugly players and allows landing space when tackling players out of bounds.

He's used to being injured so he probably didn't even know it.

We were all set to do the same if we would have gotten AJ Green.
