It's time for the Hyvee Classic to die

This "event" sucks.

I think we should play at UNI every other year. They are a state school and have a solid program. Drake can come to Hilton if they want to play us. I feel no allegiance to them with them being a private school.

If Fran doesn't want to go to CF that's on him, let's do our own thing.

Iowa State should never play a road game at Drake, not because Drake currently sucks. But, because they are a private school. UNI is a state of Iowa regent school. Iowa and Iowa State should alternate years playing a road game there.

Iowa may not ever go back to UNI under Fran, but we shouldn't set what we do based on them being chickens.

We need to partner with Drake to make sure the NCAA’s keep coming back to DSM every 3-4 years with Drake as the host. If that means giving them a home game sellout at Knapp Center or splitting a gate with them at WF every year I’m fine with that.

I like the classic. If you perform well, you are expanding your footprint in the state, and as much as you want to berate people who say that they 'can't' come to Ames for a game, the fact remains that the game is a vehicle for expanding a base, not necessarily catering to the homers that are already on board. Maybe those peeps could come to Ames, if they chose to, but many don't choose to, and this is an opportunity to snag more fans that may like what they see, and make the trip up to Ames in the future because of it. It's better than a true road, or neutral game, as I assume that we get a fair amount of the gate, and we don't have to travel far.

Scheduling it on graduation, seems a bit ill conceived, even if you are trying to entice a new audience, but it is a date that you definitely couldn't have played at Hilton. It doesn't seem any worse than playing a no-name school in a converted convention center, like some of those early season tourneys. The lack of TV, is the only negative that I see in the arrangement, and that is on us I would imagine.

What?

This is a great post - never thought of that aspect of it! A "home" NCAA game at some point would be well worth a few games in the Knapp Center!

I really gotta give it up for Pemsl for being such a warrior. Word from hawk fans was that he shattered his tibia (and then separated his shoulder and tore every muscle in his shoulder and it actually fell off, his arm fell off his body, after that vicious shove by that bully of a fan in the stands) and to come back from such an injury in such a short time is truly remarkable

I think part of it going forward needs to be that ISU and Iowa can get the TV under their normal TV options every year. It's the every other year we aren't the "home" team when we end up with bad TV.

There's a good chance we're on ESPN2 or U if this were considered an ISU home game. Anyone correct me if they know I'm wrong.

Iowa got on BTN because it's their game this year. I assume we're MC22 because it's not our game this year?

He's one of a long line of Iowa players (Olesani) whose minutes would go up if I were their coach.

So was North Carolina, an actual elite program?
iirc, UNC does those home & homes as a recruiting tool. They had a player from the area; playing here gave his family a chance to see him play a college game, and gave ol' Roy the poacher another toehold in Iowa.

Absolutely. UNC still did it though even risking losing in the gymnasium.

Tonight's game was a good example of why playing UNI is a good thing; you generally find out how tough you are as a team if you want to beat UNI.

Hadn't thought about that, pretty solid point Gunner. We will definitely benefit from them hosting on a good yr getting placed in DM would be great for us. Also quite a few benefits to the Metro area by hosting the NCAA's no matter what region we get sent to.

UNC and UNI did a 2 for 1 with the first one in Cedar Falls for Marcus Paige.

Wells Fargo isn't the best but it isn't their fault Mediacom puts out a 1987 production. How could it look good on TV? It looked fine when the NCAA tourney was there.

How is parking bad at Wells Fargo? There are lots everywhere. Follow the signs, enter the ramp, pull a ticket, and park. Unless you want to park on the street, if so, you should probably reevaluate driving into the downtown of any city.

And there is no way Fran ever said they shouldn't play at Iowa State. That would have caused a riot and ISU would be throwing that back at his face constantly.

Can we just talk for a minute about what a dump Wells Fargo is for being a newer arena?

It looks bad in person, and it looks even worse on TV. There are no good seats and parking is a nightmare. Its Des Moines trying way to hard and it just turned into a wannabe Sprint Center.

You can't be serious. If you (gasp) walk an extra block west there is a huge parking garage and you can also park for free in the huge Principal lot. Parking is not an issue unless who have no clue what you'e doing.

As far as the arena, it's nothing spectacular to look at but performs it's function of drawing big events to Des Moines.

Never been to WF and I understand the Barn was old and something bigger was needed but WF doesn't look like a place with any kind of character or charm.
