Lard should start

To amend this, though, Lard has some incredible potential if he learns to defend without fouling. Take a look at his rankings on the team for rebounds...

The kid is going to be a monster on the glass throughout his career.

What about blocked shots?

Nobody will ever be Cato again, but he has the chance to be the next best thing.

Points? Does the kid get buckets?

Oh my, he does.

Wigginton and Lard are foundation-level players (to the same degree were Niang and Morris).

Check out their per 40 stats when they were freshmen...

This is all the more amazing because we kind of lucked into him and had to take risks to get him to Ames -- those kinds of posts are not often hiding under rocks in Louisiana.

Lard has tremendous upside...assuming he is receptive to Prohm's coaching, he will get better and better. This is not a bad thing...he has the ability to come off the bench with great energy at a time when the opposing team may be moving a step slower with fatigue.

Lard, Young, and Brase should see as much time as the 15 fouls allows for. Once Talley is back he should see some minutes when one of the aforementioned fouls out or we’re facing a perimeter oriented forward. I hope we don’t see many games in which those 3 see less than 25+ minutes but have less than 4 fouls.

Starting or not, I’d like to see Lard get 20 min or 4+ fouls every game. IIRC Lard has 3 games in the last 4 or 5 where he had 3 or fewer fouls yet still only played 13 min or so.

He fouls a lot but it’s not like he’s maxing out his PT due to fouls.

Uhhh, no. Lard's propensity to get quick fouls is a pattern over several games, not just last night. Unless he suddenly improves immensely in all areas, I don't see him starting. If Beverly is going to be replaced in the starting lineup, I predict it will be by Brase who is improving more and more as he regains endurance and strength in his knee/leg. I also think his 3-pt % will continue to increase as the season goes forward, maybe to the point Prohm inserts pick-and-pop plays for him.
I'm becoming more and more of a Brase fan with every game. He went for 5 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals last night. He had one turnover but if I remember correctly it was when two ISU players went up for a long rebound and he got knocked over backwards with the ball. Hardly a damaging turnover. He only had one foul and played decent defense in 27 minutes of play. He also was efficient only taking two shots to score his 5 points and he hit his free throws going 5 for 6. I also feel like he is a steadying influence for the team.

As far as shooting the three...both of his misses last night were 3's but he is still 3 of 10 on the season. I would like to see him continue to shoot at least enough to keep the bigs on him honest and if he's hot, fire away. He was 100 of 286 in his 3+ years playing at Princeton (1.08 makes per game) for .350 which comes out to a respectable 1.05 points per 3 point attempt.

Lard still has some growing to do. I expect he will start at some point this season, but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

Hans got extended minutes with Lard’s 2 quick fouls and was playing well. His passes agains the Iowa zone D kept him on the floor. He earned Prohm’s trust.

Something about the 7.3 fouls projected per 40 minutes makes me think the rest of those stats aren’t attainable.

Brase and Solo were the game down the stretch for a reason, love Lard and he's going be the deciding factor in a lot of games we win but Prohm trusts the other two guys more. Having guys like Brase and Lard coming off the bench is huge and a luxury ISU has maybe never had, certainly not in the Morgan/Chewy/Hoiberg/Prohm eras.

I love the intensity Lard brings off the bench, he and Lewis come in, play hard and put a lot of pressure on the opposition. Larry E would have called them his "shock troops".

Lard reminds me of a more athletic version of a freshman Jared Homan. You can see the intensity both bring to the floor they just try to block everything and foul quickly.

To your other point, the Fizer/Tinsley 1999-2000 team had Paul Shirley and Martin Rancik coming off the bench.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not bagging on Lard. He oozes talent and I don’t think we can surprise as many people as we want in conference without Lard getting more court time than he is now.

A dose of humility wouldn't hurt either. Twice, he receives a pinpoint pass to score a layup and gives the body language that HE's the star. Then, misses the FT.

I'm all for celebration but the arms down flex and scream is so overused by our team. DJ does it like every other 3. The one time I saw wig do it the other team ran down and scored before he could get back on D.
Call me old school but I like the Naz calm cool collected version of celebration.
