Best kept secret restaurants in Iowa

Agreed on the Zoey's comment. Its good but best in the state may be a reach. In CR metro I like Roscoe's on the SW side the best. It is in the strip mall behind Taco John's on Edgewood. The decor is interesting but the pizza is great.

I love Taco Tico. I always go with the Texas Burrito and a Chicken Sancho.

NW Steakhouse in Mason City is really great too.

Bob's Drive Inn in LeMars is great. Get the Cheese Tavern or the Bob Dog with meat and cheese.
Roscoe's is literally a bootleg Tomaso's, they started off affiliated and then split.

I'm on the road in rural Iowa for work, so keep in mind my comparison is often against Casey's pizza.

209 Main - Paton
Lewright's Deli - Eagle Grove
Teluwut - Osage
Little further secret if you get any of their packaged beef (not necessarily in your case being on the road) there is a high probability it came from one of my family's calves. Subtle brag I'll see myself out.

Whether Zoey's is the best pizza or not, who knows, Tomaso's is great too. Never had Roscoe's.

But the calzones at Zoey's will change your life. Harps and angels, all day.

The fried chicken in KC doesn't match the awesomeness of the broasted chicken in Iowa. People recommend various places down here, but it's not nearly as good.

A few NE IA gems:

-The Old Rossville Store in Rossville. Great prime rib, friday night fish, and salad bar. Very much an old school supper club kind of place. Feels like you're walking back into the past.

-K-Town Tap in Kendallville. The place always has a crowd. The regular menu is solid bar food, and they have really good specials be it Wing Wednesday, Friday fish frys, or prime rib on Saturdays. Cheap drinks, and the owners are friendly as hell.

-St. Olaf Tap in St. Olaf. Best tenderloin in Iowa. TG on tap. What else do you need?

-Irish Shanti in Gunder. Just awesome food, in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Love the turkey tender sandwich, and of course the infamous Gunderburger is a beast.

-Safehouse Saloon in Lansing. Some of the best wings around, and an incredible selection of tap beer for a town of 1,000 people.

-The Longbranch in Florenceville. From the outside, it looks like it's halfway in disrepair, and it sits tucked away in the Upper Iowa valley literally on the Minnesota line in a town that isn't on the map. But the interior is really well done, the fish frys are top notch, and the beer is always cold.

Great list. Rossville and the Safehouse are two of my favorites. You're dead on about the wings at the Safehouse...outstanding!!

I'll add a few in that area.....The Winchester in Waterville is just getting reopened after a fire a couple of years ago. They're only serving pizza right now but it's great. If you're a fan of Taco pizza you should try their version.

In Waukon, Mulligans has good sandwiches, but my favorite is the Green Valley Getaway just north of town on Hwy 9. Great pizza and the Maply Bacon Tenderloin sandwich is awesome. Stop at WW Homestead on your way out of town to get a malt/shake and take some cheese curds home with you.

WW Homestead makes the best cheese curds I've had, anywhere.

It's even better when they're fried. If you ever make it to the Howard County Fair, there's a vendor (based in Cresco) called Reno's Smokehouse that uses WW Homestead for their cheese balls. Holy ****, are they good.

I was going to stop at the Winchester during RAGBRAI but went to Hammy's instead. I've heard good things about Green Valley, but have yet to get there.

Could not agree more. Always have to get my Bob's fix whenever I'm in the home town.
LCHS Class of 1995

Moved away for college and pretty much never went back. Nothing against LeMars just luck of the draw. Folks moved away 5 years ago and I haven't been back since.

The ice cream at Bob's is great too because it is the Wells mix. It will be interesting how things go there now that Miles Kass has passed away.

Taco Tico in Ft Dodge and Mason City is a local treasure, filled with grease and nostalgia. #crustosforever
Wow, Angie something else in common..... I am from MC, and thought it was only a MC thing than married a FD alumni and she had the same thought....

Friday nite fish fry in Masonville is awesome. Can't think of the name of the place, but it is on the main drag, and Masonville is tiny, so ...

Marco's in Dubuque has great pizza (never miss a chance when I'm in town) and I've heard their chicken is even better.

Another great place for fried curds is The Place in Protivin, which is another NE Iowa gem. It's a very cool bar that doesn't quite look like it belongs in Protivin. They're square, which makes me think they're cut off a block rather than curds, but the breading on them is great. And of course, any trip to Protivin is incomplete without stopping at The Mint for at least one.

Green Valley has good curds as well, and I'm pretty sure they're WW Homestead.
