If Iowa doesn't have this sorted out, expect to see ball control X 100 Saturday.
Cornerback is an extremely tough position from the perspective that you're either a hero, or a goat. If you understand the assignment defense your team is in, you can see many times a play which looks like the corner is horrible was actually set up by a different missed assignment. At Iowa a lot of times it's linebackers. Saturday it was both linebackers and safeties.

Mabin all conference? Lol. I know it's a holiday but isn't it a little early to be drinking?
If Iowa had 5 star upperclassmen at WR and TE with a walk on Fullback starting at RB I'd still expect to see ball control.
Remember Rhoads first year when ISU played Iowa, gonna be about like that.
While this is true, I said ball control X 100. No way do we win this game with no pass rush and secondary issues if we keep giving ISU a chance to throw the ball to AL.
Maybe we rush blitz, and probably send someone on passing downs. But it's game 2, so might be too early for this.
I am concerned as I can see a very clear path for an ISU win.
But again, no one knows how badly not having Hesse and Jewell impacted both rushing and passing defense. But there is no argument that the offensive line allowed CJB to get pressured and hit, and the safeties are obviously a work in progress.
I'm actually more concerned this year than last year.
Whatever, we're terrible. If Iowa loses to us next week it will be 100X worse than ISU losing to UNI.
Hahaha cmon man. I know your thing is to make sweeping generalizations and use extreme hyperbole to piss off hawk fans, but come on... Thats just..., come on.
But for discussion's sake, heres the thing about Mabin, and what happened yesterday: In one on one coverage, he is average at best. I have seen him make some great plays in one on one, and Ive seen him get burned horribly. Happened a couple times yesterday. He has had games like yesterday, but he has also had some incredible games. He is also a very good tackler on the outside. Iowas D on Saturday was VERY vanilla. Hardly any blitzing, masked coverages, dline stunts, etc. My friend talked to an assistant after the game, and he essentially confirmed that Iowa wasnt going to do anything crazy, and kind of wanted to put players on an island to see what they do. A combination of Miami having some decent receivers and a qb, along with Iowa playing a very basic cover 2 is what allowed them to have some success.
You can try to convince yourself that Mabin is the worst player in the league (which is essentially what youre doing by comparing him to ISUs oline), but its simply not true. Hes an average CB, imo. Gets burned sometimes, makes good plays sometimes.
No he didn't-if you watched the game he did ok-not perfect but watching the game again it was better than I thought
I figured they were going to be pretty vanilla and save it all up for this week. It'll be interesting to see how Mabin responds but that WR that torched him was not good at all

Nice little jab with the "save it all up for this week", but man, you have to get some new material.
Oh also, one of the TDs he gave up was a perfect back shoulder throw, and catch. Ive seen even the best CBs get burned on those
You think Iowa is going to go VERY vanilla this week against Iowa State like they did against Miami of Ohio?
Ummm. So based on a win against the red Miami team, you think Iowa is going to be better than OU and TCU? And if you're going by performance against ****** teams I guess Kansas would be considered our toughest opponent this year.

Line play is awful? I mean, if thats his opinion, then ok, but wow. The line opened up holes for the running backs to rush for 212 yards on 29 rushes (7.3 ypc), and 5 tds by 3 different running backs. Daniels and Wadley each had 2, and Mitchell had the 5th. The Dline gave up 158 yards on 41 carries (3.9 ypc) and 1 td. They also caused 2 fumbles (the 3rd was from a LB), and Anthony Nelson (RS FR DE) was named freshman of the week in the B1G with 2.5 sacks and 2 FF. The online were true roaders, and the dline, which did have some pressure issues ill admit, did pretty well with having no help from blitzing lbs, cbs, etc.
Like I said, its his opinion, but I have no idea how would could come to that conclusion.
No, theyll open it up a lot more, but I still dont expect them to completely open it up, as they never have under Ferentz in the OOC, for better or for worse. You can watch a game late in the B1G season vs. a OOC game, and it will look much different. Just how it is. Like I said, my buddy talked to an assistant after the game, and he confirmed the game plan was to be basic, and to put guys in basic one on one positions, and see how they do.
