Saw an email about a family movie night being hosted at Jack Trice. Showing Star Wars: Force Awakens.

First, cool idea. I assume they have done this before, but first time I noticed.

Second, and the point of this post, if you purchase a DVD, can you legally show this to a large audience, or is ISU paying for this right?

I was thinking of having a family movie night for the company I work for and did not want to get in trouble for showing a movie to 100+ people at our corporate auditorium. It would be free, similar to JTS, so maybe that is what keeps you out of trouble, not making money off the show.

This is the 4th year they've done this. Pretty sure you can show the movie if you buy it and don't charge people to watch it.

I dont think that's true, I think if its just a small private showing you'd be fine, but I doubt 100+ people would be considered small. Even if you don't charge admission.

ISU needs to pay for public performance rights in order to show the movie

Like clonetone said, they probably contacted this company: http://colleges.swankmp.com/synopsis?0039609

For your situation I think you'd need to get a quote from here: http://business.swankmp.com/RequestQuote

Or just rent the DVD and show it anyway

Now that his question has been answered, how packed to people think it'll be this year?

Looking at pictures from past years it looks like Wreck it Ralph in 2013 wasn't bad, but Frozen the next year looks like the field was completely covered.

The turn out last year wasn't bad, but they thought it was going to rain and moved it into Hilton. Of course, exiting the building it was obvious it had been nice and clear out the whole time :S

I'm kind of bummed about it, personally. If my kid was just a smidge older this would be the greatest thing ever, but I was banking on this being another little kids Disney movie.

Some comments on ISU Athletics Facebook page complaining about the choice of the movie. I think it's good they are mixing up little kids' movies with some other stuff that appeals to a wider range.

I don't think it's a "bad" thing necessarily (although it's a Junior Clone Club event, you'd think they'd aim for all age groups) and like I said, I'd be psyched if my oldest was in a slightly different age bracket. It's just unexpected when the first 3 years were consistently a Disney animated movie. It's not like they weren't drawing a crowd with those.

The only Disney animated film released since last year's event is Zootopia and that should still be in theaters during this year's event.

Yea, I had kind of been wondering about it. I figured it would end up being Inside Out or Good Dinosaur, but maybe getting the rights to stuff is screwier with the Pixar movies? Who knows. Hell, maybe they are going to try and do two movie nights this year and just haven't said anything yet.

The Force Awakens isn't that bad for most kids. Language is fine. Some violence, but not gory. There were a TON of 4 year olds and above at the theater when I took my 6 and 8 year old.

Yeah, I was kinda hoping for a Disney animated, but our 7 year old daughter is pumped for Star Wars.

The Jr. Cyclone Club facebook page had a picture of the event, touting a 'good' turnout. If you go to their pictures you can see the advertisement they sent out last week, using the photo of one of the really big turnouts, right next to the picture from last night. Stark contrast, but the weather was definitely a factor, I think.

Weather killed turnout, we were going to go, but the kids would have hated it.

My wife took our oldest and his friends, said it was fine inside the stadium in terms of weather.
