Bench production, "the weave", and fouls.

I would love to have better point production from our bench as much as anyone. However, our losses have not come because of our offense. In our 4 losses our average score was 85 points a game. So personally, I would rather have better defensive production from our bench. I think Ashton is providing that role at the moment and hope others can contribute in this way also. Bench production does not always equal bench points.

Also notice the "weave" Prohm has implemented more and more. It is causing the defense to run more and switch more before really beginning our offense. It seems to be helping us get into our sets more easily.

Finally, in our losses (and poor defense) it seemed our players were more concerned with not fouling then with playing good D. The last 2 games we have had more foul trouble, but a much more aggressive and overall better defense.

Some really good adjustments from our team and Prohm.

I'm not terribly concerned about our bench. I mean, they need to step up their production, but I think they will. The emergence of Ashton as an additional option really helps. Burton will get there. Obviously really, really talented, but probably gets more attention on defense after his quick start, and it also doesn't help his production when he is subbing for Georges, which really takes pressure off the defense.

The catch 22 with getting more production from the bench is it means we have to have the starters out of the game by definition. In a game like last night the starters need to be on the floor as much as possible. The bench needs to be more signifigant against the bottom of the B12 so the starters are rested enough to play major minutes against the teams above ISU in the standings.
I fully expect Prohm to see Burton, Ashton, and Cooke play 10-15 minutes on Saturday with KU/Big Monday following two days later.

The key for Burton is to get better on D. Currently, if he's not scoring, he's too big of a liability defensively to keep on the court much.

It always helps if you can fall back on defense and rebounding when your offense isn't hitting on all cylinders.

Exactly! Not just the weave, obviously, but passing. This is why everybody is upset when we jack up the quick 3, or go to the isolation play. Move the ball around, loosens everything up, and we ALWAYS get a good look when we do this.

The weave in basketball is kind of like sending guys in motion, in football. It's a way of reading the defense, while also setting your offensive players in the correct position to run the play. Very effective, and as you stated slows things down.

I felt our ball movement was better last night than in many games, I prefer passing to dribbling. Bilas was complaining about a possession that Monte just dribbled, but they also didn't stop him when he went to the hole and got a bucket. The weave does seem to be a good way to slow down the possession while still moving the ball.

Burton seems like a candidate for the Matt Thomas Summer Foot Speed Camp.

To Bilas' credit, he did kind of eat his words after that one. It's hard to complain with shots like that.

Seems to me that Thomas has worked harder than others on conditioning, too. It doesn't seem like he gets as worn down as others.

Kind of like Hield. That guy is a machine.

Funny to hear it praised after such much bashing here of KU for running the weave a lot to try to create an open look.

That's weird considering ISU ran the weave under Hoiberg as well.

Edit: Although it would not surprise me if some were bashing KU for running it. That's kind of how things go.

It takes six seconds off the thirty second clock so we have 24 seconds to do like the pros. Do the pros weave?

Well, you have to consider the source.
It made me laugh when I saw it in the game. Good to see Prohm starting to put his foot down, pushing the guys to get on the bus he's driving now instead of being a passenger on the players bus. Best defensive effort I have seen from ISU all season and they also looked much better when forced to play half court sets. Impressive game by ISU overall.

Thought this would be a thread about McKay's hair. Disappointed.
McKay has a battering ram working up there now. That thing is crazy. Three comments from my wife all game; "what's going with that kids hair? His head must get really sweaty.", "Why are they coming out on the court, did they just win something?" and "Why are they playing Sweet Caroline? Is Neil Diamond from Iowa? Isn't that from that Jimmy Fallon movie from like 10 years ago?"

The weave is great for us because it allows us to run it until we get a mismatch we want, usually with Georges on a big.
