There is a difference between winning in the postseason and winning in the regular season.
You also have a short memory because there were Cyclone fans, myself included, that gave you props for beating ND after immediately coming back from the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Agreed that the kvetching about a player heading into his sophomore year is a bit comical. I'm happy that Wieskamp committed to Iowa, given that (at this time) he's so highly ranked, plus he is apparently good enough that Hoiberg and Jacobson from UNI felt compelled to extend scholarship offers already. That tells me there's likely "something" there with Wieskamp. One can never say never, but I would be shocked if Wieskamp looked elsewhere barring a coaching change at Iowa. The record of highly ranked Iowa kids committing to Iowa really early and ending up at Iowa is good (Jeff Horner, Dean Oliver, Ricky Davis, Chris Street). But how it actually plays out 3+ years from now, no one can tell for sure.
No Iowa fan (who is looking at things rationally) would say Iowa has been just as good as ISU the last 4 years. The W-L records speak for themselves. But that doesn't mean that Iowa basketball has been the equivalent of Iowa State football in that timeframe. Some (not all) ISU fans act as if Iowa is on the level of TCU in the past 5 years.
Cyclones will be rather significant favorite in the hoops game this year. That would be the case whether the Cyclones were being coached by Hoiberg, Prohm or Sponge Bob Squarepants.
Improved but not the level where ISU fans would trade any of the past four seasons (and likely five) for Iowa's best season under Fran.
I just don't get it, it's not like you even have head to head (1-4, could be 1-5 soon). Why are you over here chest thumping?
You can hope that after next year Prohm struggles. Next year and the previous five there is just no comparison between the programs. The amount of weight you guys put on Marble getting drafted late second round is hilarious. He hasn't played any more than Babb and he's played a LOT less than Diante Garrett, he was drafted lower than Royce and likely drafted lower than Monte will be.
ISU has been ranked for two years STRAIGHT and will likely start out 7th-12th this season. When KF was on his hottest streak I wouldn't have dreamed of comparing football programs...yet you guys are constantly hear hyping up 1-1 in five seasons vs 4-4 over the same 5 years including some B12 tourney titles. Give it a rest.
Agreed, much easier to win on a neutral court than at a place like Chapel Hill.
Thanks!
Aaaannnddd we have the obligatory daily equivocation of basketball programs to football programs on a basketball thread.
Aaaaanddd Iowa / TCU basketball would be a toss up call.
Aaaandd your comment about anyone could coach ISU to a win over Iowa this year confirms exactly where Iowa basketball is in relation to ISU basketball.
Your post saved me a bunch of work on here today.
We already have two, ISU and UNI spent nearly all of last year in the top 25. They both proved themselves head and shoulders above the other teams in the state last year.
Well, I think the point he was making about the TCU, ISU football thing is that some of you act like if youre not at ISU's level, youre garbage, cant recruit, cant improve players, ect., which is obviously ridiculous.
Careful, like you have been quite complimentary of the other side.
Fran can recruit okay. Some players have improved under his watch and Iowa has gotten better.
I think Weiskamp recruitment fits right into this story line. Lots of time to go before we see how he ends up but I think JoKlike is what I would predict now. Very likely a step up from Oglesby type player of past.
So his recruitment, nor anything else coming out of hokland is news. They will finish in top 1/2 of B1G this year, probably go to dance and lose to ISU. Same story, new year.
Yes, one year makes UNI head and shoulders above Iowa
One year? UNI has been better than Iowa on average for a long time. There is a very clear in state pecking order:
1. ISU
2. UNI
3. Iowa
4. Drake
Please show me where I was chest thumping, or saying we are better than ISU. Seriously, look at every one of my posts on here. Ive been nothing but complimentary towards your program, and have admitted that you are ahead of Iowa. The only point Ive been making was that we have had a good improvement from where we started with Fran till now. COuld it be better? Sure, but it could have also been Lick v2.0. Trust me, Id love to be where you guys are at, but thats still doesnt mean Iowa is some crap program. We are getting better players, more attention, and more energy around the program. That alone makes me happy. Those lickliter years were about as bad as you could get.
This is from the FWIW dept. Whether this Joe Weiskamp fellow becomes a fine player or not is not important to me. I hope he has as good a career as he can have no matter where he plays. What I would like to see, is the occasional player in Iowa choose ISU for his destination to play basketball. It would be fun to have an Iowa native starring for the Cyclones. Not sure whether Iowa kids do not fit into our recruiting strategy or not but if there is an Iowa player that is talented, would like to see him play in Ames rather than Iowa City or Cedar Falls.

Does Iowa even make the tournament without White?

It is a good story if it can happen but realistically, there is maybe 1 kid/year out of the state that can contribute to a team trying to win their conference. Last 3 of those - Barnes, Paige, McDermott - we are 'affected' by Coach McDermott. I think we will be in on some going forward from the state but I haven't seen anyone in last 3-4 years that would have made us better.
What does that have to do with anything? Does Duke win the NC without Okafor? Does Wisconsin get to the Final Four without Kaminski? Do you guys with the Big Twelve tourney without Morris?
