Keeping TJ

Nothing? People do realize assistants make like $200k+ right? That's still a pretty awesome job for someone with probably only a BA.

And isn't TJ like 37? That's not old at all to still be an assistant coach. Underwood must have been like 49 and still an AC.

TJ makes $250 now I believe. I think if we bumped him to $350, it would be hard to pass up. I think TJ is very level headed and can get his ego in check.

This can still be a good place for him.

He can land a good mid major job in 2-3 years if he continues to build his resume and reputation for bringing players.

No brainer, offer him some more money and keep him as long as he wants to stay. His HC credentials had some holes in them, but he is a really good asst. coach.

He can ease the transition and help Prohm build relationships with the players. Also gives Prohm someone with a lot of experience at power schools, something Prohm lacks, and knows what it takes to recruit and win in Ames.

No - No GMac disciples please

If Hoiberg trusted him and kept him around, why would you not want him around? He may be a Gmac guy originally, but he obviously became a Hoiberg guy. I'll take that any day. And I think from Prohms statements, he left the door open to keep 1 or 2 of these guys around. Hopefully that's TJ (I think Henry will get a chance at the pros soon)

If CSP wants to retain him, we'll see how much the "I love Ames" quotes were actually real or just a chip he used to try and land the HC job. I can't blame him for trying. He will make a great coach someday.

All the TJ loyalty talk will be tested, did he really wanna be here? Or did he wanna be where he thought he'd be HC? I think its the former but in reality, even if Fred was still here, without getting the HC job (or a coach in waiting type of thing), TJ wasn't going to be in Ames for too long. He was going to jump at HC job very soon, tough to blame him for that. The only thing that would sour me if he didn't return was if he used the same excuse he did last time. There are only a couple of places in the country that could be a better learning experience for TJ this season. He's never been part of a team with a target on their back, that was expected to make a tourney run, that needs him to showcase his recruiting talents more than ever. Any "pad my resume" excuse for leaving will be just that, an excuse. This year could be the year he hangs his hat on, that gets him that HC job he wants.

Yea both McMahon and William Small will prob apply for the gig at Murray st. I'd say whichever doesn't get it will join Prohm. It wouldn't surprise me if TJ applies for that gig either.

ESPN reporting McMahon is the new Murray State head coach. That didn't take long.

If TJ stays here, and we continue to win, then he will get looks as a HC. It's dumb to think otherwise, or that you have to go to small schools first. Sure that's a path, but not the only one.

Of course it is not the only way, but it is dumb to think it wouldn't be beneficial to him to get a job like like UWGB. Hope he stays 2 more years, let alone until we are in need of hiring a HC.

IMO had the opening been next year, he would have been the guy.

This is why he'll likely have to go sooner than later. The whole "he could have been the guy" thing.

Not sure he (and Romar) had great job security going forward in Washington. Their conf record (5-13) was the worst in 12 years and they missed the NCAA tournament each of the last 4 years.

Note that they dropped from an excellent program the year before TJ arrived, and stayed there during his stay.

Winning doesn't exactly follow TJ around.

I don't think it's fair to hang that on TJ. He has proven he's a good recruiter. Who knows whether he would have made a good HC, but ultimately the success and failure of the programs he's worked with rest with Greg, Fred and Romar.

I think ISU is a good case study because he clearly brought in some decent talent with both Fred and Greg, however one was successful and not the other.

we ALL want TJ to stay.

Yes we do, if.......he's "all in". Knowing he was praised for having a great relationship with the players, and not getting the job on top of it, he might not feel like he wants to hang around, regardless that its a good decent salary. We all would like to think he'd bust his butt to recruit for the new coach and ISU, because remember he did say he came back because it was like home. But I firmly believe he came back because he thought he could get the job when it opened up. Not that he was given a promise, but that he thought he could get it. But what happens until next season jobs open up? There goes the recruiting relationships like what happened with Matt A. if he leaves. However, I think Prohm will be more hands-on with the recruits knowing that. If he stays, there would be some continuity and some help to Prohm as to life in the Big 12 and recruiting to Ames. I'm not questioning TJ's love for ISU at all, but it isn't every person that will stay around and watch the 'other guy' bond with the players as the main guy. But that's the chance he took when he came back. I hope if he does stay it isn't because its the only job he can get payed for at this time, but rather when he and Prohm meet they can become friends and work together on the same page.

The Niang family wasn't excited about TJs return to Ames.

Hoiberg recommended Prohm for the HC job.
