Thought experiment... if you were a head coach, would you rather go a scenario where?
- you have a loaded roster year 1 with massive expectations, but the cupboard is potentially bare year 2
- you have a longer leash year 1 to make some adjustments and implement your system, and you have a solid core of underclassmen/recruits that you can build around or use as role players
Would love Jeff Hornacek as head coach, but this tweet looks like that hope is fading fast. Reality is it would be an extreme long shot if we hired him.

How do you know he wasn't offered more money and turned it down anyway?
Larry Brown actually makes a ton of sense. He doesn't like to stay places long but destroys it(in a good way) wherever he goes. It's scary how good we could be with him coaching this years team. If TJ is in our long term plans, than who better for him to learn from for a couple years. I'd bet Brown would be game to take this thing on for a 3 year contract to have a real shot at a NC, then bolt after 2 years and TJ is probably more ready. As crazy as it sounded at first, I love it.
Headed to Fairbury on Tuesday, Will check it out.Ah, the ole Fairbury to Ames commuter route.
You don't not fit that mold working with those two guys. Look at WVU's bench during their games. Huggins out 5 feet on the court or leaning on the scores table constantly taking the refs attention. Every asst. on the bench up shouting and wildly waving their arms at all times.
Fred refused to discuss...he was gone from the gitgo. He was headed to bulls awhile back.Jeremy, if this is the case, why didn't we at least explore the option to give Fred that and keep him? This leads me to believe that Fred didn't give a rats butt about the money, but basically said what he said in the press conference, "here is my list of NBA coaching jobs, if any of those come up during my tenure at Iowa State, I'd be interested in leaving for them."
I heard rumor that Coach K wants to give us another shot and might come here.
Very disappointed to see Altman is the mystery candidate. Very underwhelmed. Have you watched his Oregon teams play? Looked to me to be very undisciplined and arrogant. Not what I'd want representing ISU.
Funny that some are so down on TJ but excited about Altman. He flunked out as K State head coach the first time around. While he's "stabilized" at Creighton and then Oregon, I'd much rather have the potential of TJ then the known of Altman.
First on my list would be Hornacek. Then, TJ and whomever the top mid-majors are - Underwood seems like he might be worth a hard look - has Power 5/Big 12 assistant experience as well - just would have to make sure the buyout is huge re: K State.
Prohm - 2
Underwood - 0
Leon Rice - 0
Dave Rice - like 1000
we should totally hire Dave Rice!
He just wasn't going to sign a new contract and bolt 3 weeks later.
Indeed. Fred learned the game from Johnny, Tim Floyd, Larry Brown, Larry Bird, Flip Saunders, Kevin McHale ... multiple hall of famers.
TJ spent three years with Fred. Who are his other mentors? McDermott and Romar?
FWIW, I think the controversy at Oregon disqualifies Altman given the Dept. of Education's current interest in ISU's Title IX compliance (along with 100 or so other institutions around the country).
Out of CW list, my preference is
1) Hornacek, sounds like it's not happening though
2) Underwood, get him before K St. hires him next year. Might not come here but worth a shot. Knows what it takes to win in the Big 12. Assistant for Huggins and Martin. Major reason why Martin did well at Kansas St.
3) Altman, 2nd best coach on the list but with the scandal at Oregon I don't see Pollard hiring him
4) Rice, good coach with a unique recruiting style. Very good defensive coach
5) Otz, good recruiter, very risky hire with no head coaching experience.
6) Prohm, not sold on him at all. Murray St. has been good for awhile now.
I'm the lone member of #TeamUnderwood
I would take Altman in a heartbeat. Oregon was 24-39 in the 2 years prior to Altman taking over. Altman has been at Oregon for the same 5 year stretch that Hoiberg was at ISU. Year 1 Altman wins 21 games, year 2 he wins 24 games, year 3 he wins 28 games, year 4 he wins 24 games, and year 5 he wins 26 games. He took Oregon (not a basketball school) to 3 straight NCAA tourney appearances, has won his first game each time, and took the Ducks to a Sweet 16. His road record at Oregon is 26-25 in 5 years... Hoiberg's road record at ISU... 19-35 in his 5 years. Hoiberg won 115 games in that span while Altman won 123 games.
Hoiberg led ISU to 12th place, 3rd place, 4th place, 3rd place, and 2nd place finishes in the Big XII in his 5 years. Altman led Oregon to 7th place, 2nd place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and 2nd place finishes in the Pac 12 in his 5 years.
Now you can argue strength between the conferences over that time span as the Big XII was better in most regards but you could also argue that Iowa State had more talent on their roster in each of those seasons so it's a wash IMO.

The problem is altman is good'but not great as several of his teams faltered down the stretch. I have watched altman a ton and he will not match fred's winning.I would take Altman in a heartbeat.
