Re: To everyone wanting a BIG name

I am surprised with everyone who wants a big splash hire. Sure all these names sounds great but what happens at the end of the day if we keep racking up the wins and make some deep runs in the NCAA tournament? Odds are they will leave again, maybe for a "bigger" college program.

Otzelberger has everything thing we are looking for. To me he is a proven recruiter. Heck, if he can recruit guys to play under McDermott's style of play he can recruit anyone. He has a long history here and it seems like his family wants to be here long term. Allison's comments on their kids seeing their first game would be at Hilton and not Washington was pretty reveling how much Iowa State means to them. The current kids already love him and he recruited a lot of them. He is obviously going to keep they same style of play.

TJ is going to be coaching somewhere in the next few years. My fear is that he turns out to be a very successful coach, and in 5 years we are talking about how "we lost another one".

That being said, TJ is my second choice behind Hornacek.

Saying "be glad it happened" is all fine and good ... I am. My question is: since Fred came asking for the job what is in his contract? In most cases colleges need to buy out remaining contracts with coaches if they want to fire them. In this case Fred left in the middle of a contract. Does Fred owe the university cash in exchange for leaving early? I suppose that he had more leverage when he signed the long term contract...

That's what the buyouts in the contract are for. You buyout the contract. We get $500,000 because that was the buyout for him to leave for the NBA

For mid majors it's all about recruiting the right players that fit your system. It's that way for any coach. McDermott failed mostly because he recruited players that just didn't fit his system. Ben Jacobsen is very successful at UNI but if he came to IsU and recruited the Ejim and Monte types it wouldn't work to his system. Licklighter was a disaster at Iowa for the same reason. Bo at wisc gets both, he gets great talent that can be molded to his system...best of both worlds. A Mid Major coach can be very successful here if he gets good talent that can fit the system.

Otz has everything we are looking for...except actual head coaching experience. Which is typically the #1 asset people are looking for. If Otz had a year or two of success at Northern Kentucky or Green Bay, this wouldn't be much of a discussion. But hiring someone without head coaching experience is a big risk. One we took with Hoiberg when the program was in the basement of the B12. Well its not any more and many of us don't want to take another big risk on someone without experience when so many others who have that experience are likely available.

How many guys have all of these amazing mid-major coaches put in the NBA though? Zip?

You gotta ask your self...who do you want pacing the sidelines next Feb on Big Monday when ISU is taking on KU in the Phog to lock up the Big 12 Conf Title? Or....who do you want getting Niang,Morris and McKay locked in for 1st Round play in March when we're setting on a 1 seed?

Jeff H is the only candidate mentioned so far that doesn't give me heartburn to hire.

It's pretty simple, IMO.

Put some feelers out on Hornacek and Altman. If they aren't interested, move on.

Put a feeler on Underwood. If it sounds like he'll only be here 1 year and replace Weber at K-State next year, move on.

Hire TJ.

In the end, I think TJ is our next coach, but I doubt he'll be at the top of the list. (Except for Pollards)

But their cheerleaders....

Meh, 2/10, shouldn't be a big factor here.

Very true. But he could also struggle and in 5 years we are saying "whew, glad we didn't give the job to him".

Personally, I'd rather see how good of a coach he is by watching him a a mid or low major. Not here. If he loves Ames and ISU like everyone says he does, maybe he comes to coach here in 5 years after proving himself at a lower school?

Re: To everyone wanting a BIG name

Why does this matter? What was Fred's? Everyone starts somewhere.

Well when one make's a statement that he's "everything we want". Well, I want a proven head coach.

But since you made the comparison.... what was TJ's playing record and accolades? All Big 8? All American. How many years in the NBA as a player? How many in a front office? Who did he play for in the NBA? Larry Brown? Larry Bird? What contacts and other tutelage does he have? Whose offices has he sat in and what exactly is his experience running the pro-sets that made Hoiberg so successful and probably are key to our success, at least with this current crop of players?

I don't see how one can compare Fred to TJ

It will be really fun watching the Greek Freek Part II filling up Sportscenter Top 10 at some other school in the coming seasons.

JP knows exactly how good of a coach he is because he's watched him coach close up for almost 10 years.

Out of CW list, my preference is

1) Hornacek, sounds like it's not happening though
2) Underwood, get him before K St. hires him next year. Might not come here but worth a shot. Knows what it takes to win in the Big 12. Assistant for Huggins and Martin. Major reason why Martin did well at Kansas St.
3) Altman, 2nd best coach on the list but with the scandal at Oregon I don't see Pollard hiring him
4) Rice, good coach with a unique recruiting style. Very good defensive coach
5) Otz, good recruiter, very risky hire with no head coaching experience.
6) Prohm, not sold on him at all. Murray St. has been good for awhile now.

I'm the lone member of #TeamUnderwood

Yep. Jamie didn't even contact Fred about what it would it take to keep him here, just like he's not conducting a coaching search right now.

Once Jamie knew he could get Otz he force Hoiberg out. It's all been evident for years. Am I doing this right?
