Alright, finished replacing the F5 key on the laptop ready for coach watch day 2.

I think that TJ is still the favorite as of today. The lack of HC experience give me pause but not more than taking a Mid-Major who hasn't recruited against other P5 coaches. Every coach has some warts but Otz has support of the ISU, I think Otz P5 assistant experience is at least level with the mid major coaches names we've heard up to this point. Let the interviews separate out the winner.

Hornacek plus TJ would be a home run, but I am not exactly sure how interested Jeff is in ISU as opposed to just getting a Suns extension. I also think if this was a realistic option the deal would be done or almost done and be choice one for Pollard/Leath. Satisfy's the desires of both a name coach and keeping TJ as the coach in waiting and there wouldn't be as many names being leaked in day 1 as we heard. IMO

As for the others, I like the Prohm due to his wide open system, dominated his conference, and the fact he has gotten players from Murray State to the NBA in Canaan and Payne (projected lottery this year after averaging 20pts/gm) which should suit Monte/Nick/Hallice and help 2016 recruiting. Intrigued by Rice and Underwood, watching some of their games last year Rice inverted the offense and was gave players the green light to shoot at any time. Underwood seems like a good coach a jump from SFA would be bigger than Boise St, I would be concerned about their first year recruiting and Otz staying on as an assistant.

As for Dana Altman, he has the resume, local connections, and good style for ISU's roster. Would be a good hire but, I just don't see him leaving a top 20 team with Nike money and facilities. Also the scandal of last year and the lack of info he had or didn't tell his administration would concern me if I was JP/Leath.

Steve Prohm is who I think gets selected.

He has kinda been in a similar situation.

He took over a Murray State program that was incredibly succesful and already has a built in roster with mostly senior players and took them to the tourney.

Once they all left, he rebuilt the team and got back into the post season.

Also, in this year's draft, he is going to have a player be picked in the NBA lottery (Cameron Payne), so I think he is good at player development.

The only reason they did not go to the NCAA Tuurney this year was they lost on a last second shot in their conference tournament championship to Belmont.

If they hire Prohm, I think it is critical to keep TJ. The guy can recruit.

I agree. I wish it didn't though. From what I read yesterday, the lawsuit says he knowing recruited a player accused of sexual assault who then assaulted a student at Oregon. No hint of a cover-up. in my opinion, not enough to disqualify him from being our coach but hard to hire someone with open lawsuit against him.

Another poster mentioned yesterday that the DA had dismissed the lawsuit, but I can't find a link to back that up.

Per Rothstein and others TJ had Pollard's 100% backing before an interview was done with any other candidate.

Also Fred had told Diallo he couldn't commit to being back in April.

I think it's pretty obvious why TJ came back. Call it a conspiracy if you want, or call it common sense and logic.

Logic is right. The only question is whether Pollard told him he would be he HC or just in the running. It sure looks like he has been acting HC for awhile if you follow who ISU has offered in the last month.

I just wrote like 1300 words on what I learned today. Some analysis on the situation/Fred presser too. Check it out here. I'll post a daily report every night here on the forums (like I did with #HoibergWatch) until we get this thing put behind us. Here's a link to today's update.

I just can’t comprehend the small time thinking that permeates so many people that love Iowa State. Why are we told every day that we need to settle for an Assistant Coach that has recruited 0 players that had long term careers in the NBA, for the time he has been a top assistant at a P5 conference he has contributed to a losing conference record, oh, and if he is so close to Iowa State, Iowa State means so much to him and this team, why did he leave 2 years ago for a lateral move?

I guess that why we continue to be the same old little Iowa State…hopefully President Leath truly doesn’t feel that way and his words are followed by actions that prove it’s not just lip service

Intrigued by Rice and Underwood, watching some of their games last year he inverted the offense and was gave players the green light to shoot at any time though I would be more concerned about their first year recruiting and Otz staying on as an assistant.

Not sure why the Suns would give JH an extension. He has 1 more year and a team option for a 2nd. They are not going to add more years to his deal if they want to let him go in a year. Their owner is cheap. If he succeeds next year, they have their team option for another and then can work on a deal.

If ISU wants to take him away from the Suns, they save the money from firing him and make a run at Tibs or another coach.

My question for the Otz is the guy camp is what kind of connections has he made to hire a veteran assistant that has head coaching experience? Fred has so many contacts in the game that he was able to get a guy like Bobby Lutz to come to Ames. Morton or Richardson are not going to step down from a head coaching gig to take an assistant job at Iowa St. Just not realistic.

Would be very happy with Prohm.

In a lot of people's eyes that resume is not as impressive as being a lead recruiter for 9 years in a power 5 conference (2 of which were successful)

My completely made-up prediction for how this goes down, as of today:

Late this week or over the weekend, details leak about a contract offer to Hornacek, something like 5 years, $12M. Hornacek gets his team option picked up by the Suns and says no.

Next week we hear about interviews with 3 candidates, TJ, Prohm and one more.

Then mid-week there is a press conference announcing TJ as the new coach with lots of glowing praise for how well he handled the team during the past month and how he blew Leath away during the interview process.

Or something like that.

Why wouldn't they pay Altman the same as Oregon does?

Why is it bad that Leach wants some say in this. Sometimes it is better to get a 2nd opinion on a hire before it is made. Many companies have a multiple interviews with multiple people. I don't see what the big deal is. Leach wants to make sure the right hire is made.

And then the meltdown caused by speculation with no basis in fact that Hornacek would have come for a 5/13 contract.

I know Kevin Ollie just won a championship a year ago and it is unlikely he leaves, but right now, does the MBB job at Iowa State in the Big XII have more appeal than the job at UCONN in the American Conference?

I like the Robinson name, Tyndall not so much.

Two names that have come up in the head coaching search that I think would be home-run 1-year lead assistants are:

Lavell Moton, UNC-Central
Kareen Richardson, UMKC

It's unlikely, of course, that a head coach would come here to be an assistant, but if they are ready to move up, one year on the bench with a Top 10 team and they would be a really attractive candidate for any openings next year. It's a long shot, of course, but I think they are both future stars in the coaching industry.

Moton would double his salary doing that.

I agree the Suns wouldn't want to give an extension as of today. Jeff's only leverage to not come into this season as a lame duck coach and possibly fired by December if things go bad, is to drum up interest and force the Suns to pick up an option and commit to more years. No idea if Thibs even wants the Suns job or to sit out and see what is available next year.

Didn't he just sign a MONSTER extension with what I would assume is a huge buyout?
