i think the McDermott hire is the only one that sticks out in my mind. Chizik was a home run at the time, and cpr had the resume.
Its more so with the firing and contracts that I have the most questions about. I wonder how long McD and chizik would have been around if they didn't bail.

What's funny is it sounds like everyone wants a McDermott type of hire. Or how else are you expecting to hire a proven coach? The good ones normally aren't unemployed.
Literally nobody wants a McDermott type hire...just because a coach comes from a mid-low major does NOT mean he is a McDermott type hire.
3 out of the 4 coaches in the final 4 were head coaches at mid-low majors before taking over their respective schools.
In the Big 12 Bill Self came from Oral Roberts. Lon Kruger started at Texas Pan American. Those are the two most respected coaches in the conference. Shaka Smart just came from VCU.
Eustachy and Floyd came from Utah State and New Orleans...are all of those 'McDermott type hires'? Guys like Brad Underwood and Steve Prohm have proven they can coach, they just need to be able to recruit at this level.

You mean how McDermott was rumored to be in the running for other p5 schools as well? mcdermotts hiring was lauded as a good hire at the time. McDermott would have been gone had he not made the tourney the following year.
So why not shoot for a hire like Archie Miller? Dayton may not technically be a mid-major, but it's the type of job that would be a stepping stone to get to a better school. Archie has brought in plenty of good talent for a school like Dayton. He recruited and signed Juwan Staten and other 3 and 4 stars at an A-10 school. Give him a Big 12 job and he's going to sign guys that are Big 12 talent. He's already proven he can outcoach guys like Boeheim and adjusts his playing style to his players. He's the "smart" hire. McDermott was nowhere close to the calibur of a guy like Miller. Miller is the closest thing to the Shaka Smart at Texas hire there is for us.
I would be very happy with Archie Miller (although I think he's more of a longshot to leave given previous opportunities he has turned down). Underwood and Prohm were just two examples I chose to use.
that is actually not true, Chiz was not a strong hire. Pollard did not do his homework. First of all, Chizik was a problem at Texas. He was having big time problems with other members of the coaching staff. On top of that, there was a lot of problems with his defensive scheme against the emerging spread offenses in the Big 12. Mack Brown knew he had a problem and was more than happy to pawn it off to gullible Pollard. Secondly, where was it in Chizik career did he coach at a place that did not have top talent and resources? He just did not have any experience at doing more with less.
Your assersion isn't exactly accurate. Chiz had been a very successful DC at Auburn before moving to UT, which is also indicative of why Auburn wanted him back as head coach in spite of two atrocious seasons at ISU. And to imply that Mack Brown had a handle on anything is laughable. The only thing you're correct about is that Chiz did not know how to do more with less.
If Gene Chizik was that bad he wouldn't have won the national championship at Auburn. And we sure as hell haven't won many games since his guys left.
I hope this is a joke. Chizik was so awful of a coach that Auburn fired him two years after winning the championship. Chizik got ridiculously lucky and was able to take all of the previous coaches players. He's horrible and probably won't land another head coaching gig unless it's at a small school.
to be honest i wasnt even a huge ISU when Chizik was hired but I know it was pretty much lauded nationally as a huge surprise get for us. didnt work out, but on paper it was as good as we could have done.
