Official 2015 Hoiberg NBA Speculation Thread

No. We chose to believe that. He led us to believe that he was very happy in Ames. No reason to doubt that. There were always bits and pieces of evidence that he was intrigued by the NBA.

Did Fred ever actually use the words "ISU is my dream job"? I'm honestly asking because I don't know. There is a world of difference between saying that as compared to saying "coaching at ISU has been a dream of mine".

[I’d love to end my career here,†Hoiberg said in a phone interview with the Ames Tribune. “I’ve got something special in Ames. My kids get to see their grandparents every day if they want to, and that’s stuff you can’t replace. To look up in the crowd (during games) and there’s my parents, my in-laws, my brother, my sister-in-law, my other brother drives over from Omaha a lot, just to have that family support, you can’t replace that.“I’m very happy here. My kids love it. I’d love to spend the rest of my career here.†- See more at: http://amestrib.com/sports/men-s-basketball-hoiberg-gets-raise-isu#sthash.vI8kwEMQ.dpuf/QUOTE]

That sounds like they expect him to leave.

Why do you get think that? He was asked that IF Fred left, would he stay at Iowa State. He's just answering a question based on speculation. I'm sure all the players have thought about the possibility.

They could change their mind too. What if ISU hired a replacement coach who stole candy from Georges when he was a little kid? Would he want to stay then?

Pants on fire!

He may not have done anything personally to ME, but there's an unspoken promise to his players that he would stick around and see things through. He has a preseason top ten team next season and he's leaving them in the lurch.

I understand that it's part of college sports and I figured he might leave at some point, but this year just seems too soon. Way too much unfinished business at ISU, which is definitely a let down for everyone.

Yes, it is a letdown. I don't think the players need you as their forgiveness spokesperson.

Half of me agrees completly, the other half has Fred so built up I want to and maybe choose to believe the BS.

I was a diehard Cyclone basketball fan through 2005 then my career changed and became very busy. 05' brought a couple of unexpected family deaths, I got married and in in 06' had a 10 week premature son that made me a NICU regular for 2 months during time I would have watched the Cyclones. By the time my second son came during the 07-08 season I had mostly trimmed the Cubs and Cyclone basketball out of my life catching the occasional game if I came across it was pretty much just football for me. By 2009-10 I couldn't name a player.

When they hired Fred I was instantly engaged again. Fred was my favorite player when I was in Jr. High and High School. I even watched a lot of his early NBA career. Hence, I watched every game in 2010-11 and went to most of them with my then 4 year old son buying one of the ticket packs they used to offer. He is 8 now and hasn't missed a Cyclone Basketball game (except the big Monday ones he fell asleep for :) it is kind of our thing. When he was 5 he got really sick, underwent chemo and couldn't go to games or really leave the house because he was so immune suppressed but never missed one. He isn't a big football fan (doesn't really get it) but he refused to be one of Kirk's kid captains because they wouldn't let him wear an ISU jersey at the game (he went to U of I hospitals for treatment), he is a diehard and loyal Cyclone because of Fred. When he finished his treatment and got the all clear and we went to Dayton for the tourney he chose this over Disney World. The 2 years he was getting treatment Cyclone basketball, Royce White, Chris Babb, Fred and company gave him something to look forward to, hope, distraction and enjoyment. It gave us something we could share too. For that I will be eternally grateful.

He told me last week his dream was to be a scientist and play basketball for the Cyclones and asked how he could do what Fred did (be a ball boy etc.) because he wanted to be like Fred. Given all this and how much Cyclone basketball has meant to us. I was bracing on how to tell him Fred was likely leaving because I knew he would be crushed, it has really been a special ride for us. Hell at age 6 he used Fred's loyalty to convince me not to move to Michigan.

Anyway, I told him last night and to my suprise he was fine with it. He said "I know, Caleb told me at school yesterday. He is going to the Bulls, now we will have two teams to cheer for!" I smiled and said "I guess we will".

Sorry for the long winded diatribe but as he often does he gave me a little perspective. Fred is a guy that has his own kids and own dreams and wants what's best for them the same way I do. He has given us a lot and I will forever be grateful despite the emotions I may feel. So for me and my son Fred is still our guy and always will be and now I get to spend more time with my son watching another team. At the end of the day that is really what it is all about.

Great post!

Obviously that quote has been thrown in Fred's face a number of times this week, but I don't see anything in that quote that is untrue or would be rendered false by leaving for the NBA. I'm sure he would be happy ending his career in Ames, that doesn't preclude being happy doing other things as well. And he won't be able to replace the family stuff in the NBA, that's true as well. I just didn't take that quote as a promise to spend the rest of his career in Ames.

Question, is it better for us if Fred ends up staying this coming year, or if he goes?

I feel like if he stays it the questions will always be there and the recruiting will take a HUGE hit, bigger than it already has.

THoughts?

I didn't say that he owes me anything. I am saying that I cannot imagine ever doing to ISU what he would be doing because of how much I love ISU. What makes it worse is that I know he loves ISU more and is still willing to do it. This is not about Fred doing anything wrong. I just don't understand it AT ALL. And I never will.

What is he doing to ISU? He's never told ISU or its fans that he will never leave Iowa State or that he will never consider any other jobs. He says he loves it at Iowa State and would love to stay at Iowa State the rest of his career. I would love to stay at my current job and location the rest of my life, but honestly, if NASA came pursuing me to work as an engineer for a mission to Mars, i would seriously consider it.

He watched us push Johnny Orr out the door, and didn't get much of a hearing when he first wanted the ISU job. I think it's fair to say that Fred understands how temporary relationships tend to be.

I won't love it if he leaves, but I'd do the same thing if that was my goal.

Well, Pollard must be confused...

Quote from Pollard on 5/12/2015 (via DSM Register): "HE'S ALWAYS SAID from Day 1 that his lifelong goal has been to coach in the NBA"

Quote from Pollard on 4/11/2014 (via Ames Tribune): "...the NBA stuff is a whole separate animal and whether he wants to coach in the NBA, WHICH HE'S NEVER INDICATED TO ME, that’s a decision he’d have to make..."

I think the common thread is there are those of us who feel we're screwed if Fred leaves and those that think we'll be fine if he goes.

For me I just look back at the futility of the 2000's to know we're screwed. No other coach was able to get us where we are today and no coach in the Big 12 has been able to be as much of a threat to KU's reign as Fred has. Those two things matter to me.

So yes, IMHO 5 years is too short. I'm a fan and can have that opinion.

See Pollards letter about the transfer epidemic when we were on the wrong end of that. He says what's convenient for him at that time.
