That's because he got all the carries. The players behind him were so much better (like WAY better) but Ferentz liked Weisman more so he chose to play him instead of trying to win. I wouldn't be surprised if Daniels/Canzeri/Wadley all had long NFL careers after they finish up at Iowa

Weisman should have been the fullback.

I don't think Weisman was great, I didn't think Rudock was good but I find it REALLY hard to believe one of the top paid coaches in College Football, one who so many Hawk fans have loved for so long and bought shirts that say "In Kirk We Trust" just all of a sudden decided to stop trying to win games.

You can say all you want and try to rationalize why Rudock was getting PT because he was the "safer option" but there is no way you can rationalize not playing the best RB on the team. I can promise you Ferentz wants to win more than you do

I haven't once questioned whether or not Ferentz wants to win. You do realize there are different approaches to that right? Some coaches believe that taking chances and being risky is the best way to win. Some believe playing it safe is the best way. Some try to find a happy medium. Apparently you are the only one on the planet who hasn't noticed that KF is an ultra conservative coach. He'd rather play his guy who is a great teammate and never fumbles instead of a younger guy who may actually be a better option. Not because he doesn't want to win, but because in his opinion playing it safe is the best way to win.

You honestly think the reason Weisman got a majority of the carries was because he thought the back up RB's would fumble the ball?

I think that was part of the equation. I have no doubt he felt like Weisman was the best option, and injuries played a role in it at times too. That doesn't change the fact that Weisman was a fullback playing RB. When everyone was healthy there were better RBs on the roster. Maybe not safer options, but definitely more talented ones.

This is so confusing to me. If your backup RB's don't have the coaches confidence to hold onto the football how good are they really?

I'll agree with you that Weisman was a FB playing RB which I think speaks volumes to how bad the people behind him were. Obviously if they were talented enough and could carry the ball without fumbling they would have played over a fullback

Obviously in most systems you are right they would play. Kirk Ferentz is more conservative than about 98% of coaches out there. There is plenty of other examples.

Why does it have to be the same position? Just off the top of my head here is a few examples of his conservative philosophy keeping better players on the bench.

Christensen over Stanzi
Adam Shada over anyone else on the roster
McCann over Banks
Vandeberg and Hillyer over Willies
Typically having a slow white guy handle punt return duties

Because KF always has played his best RB's, it's not a position you have to be "safe" with...they can't really blow assignments or give up big plays, can't throw INTs, etc. If they can't hold onto the ball then they aren't that good in the first place.

Plus two of those guys listed are QB's, I even gave you the benefit of the doubt you COULD say he plays the "safer play" there...CJB proved that to be wrong by how bad he was when he did he get playing time. Don't even know who Shada played over and Willies sucked and went JUCO because nobody wanted him when he left Iowa.

A running back can't blow an assignment or give up a big play!? Wow. I know about every single QB in the country would disagree with you there.

Sorry obviously he can miss a block or screw up in pass protection.

All that matters is KF has always given the carries to the best RB

In some cases that's exactly what I'm saying. He makes safe choices. That's only news to you apparently. And yes you look plenty stupid trying to desperately explain yourself. A RB can't blow an assignment or give up a big play... HA. I wouldn't have pulled that gem out of you if I hadn't kept playing the Devil's Advocate.
