Spring Game

99% sure the shenanigans happened the Tuesday before the spring game.

Coe and Irving never made the spring game. Pierson didn't show up until summer either. I'm comfortable with saying that this years number 1 Off and Def would handle last years no problem.

lots of new faces are playing..esp on D and these cats are not slow btw. Wiltz, harris, Northrup, Harvey, peavy, jones. Tucker all played a lot and contributed. That's 7 on D that I can think of.

Lol oh boy. It's spring. They weren't going all out or into the playbook. Offense is almost always behind the defense this time of the year. And it's only a small sample size, not a whole game to get going.

I'll agree with everything you say, except, not getting into the playbook. This is the same excuse I've heard for lackluster offensive performance, since I became a fan in the early 70s. Now for the spring, this might be true, but when you've heard it as much as I have, it's like hearing Rhoads say this is the best offensive line he's coached. It's just a cover up. And the worst part is, if you can't run the simple stuff well, then forget about doing anything complicated.

The negativity on this thread is why I'm rarely here during football season. Shameful

Actually the game started with ones against ones and then they started switching Players around after that.

It's so hard to tell with QB because the playbook is so simplified for this but SR looked about the same to me. Bundrage had 2-3 steps on his defender and overthrew him. Remember a pass in the ground at the receivers feet and one to the sideline that was caught with a good jump which lead to little yards after the catch. Had nice screen passes and short yardage middle of the field passes.

GR looked about the same as well. Made some nice plays, but also some not nice plays. Just nothing memorable.

JL, that kid has some velocity on his ball. Between the 20's I thought his throws were spot on even on the run. He struggled with a corner endzone touch pass, but each time the receiver was tightly covered. Low production in the red zone, but thought he did alright between that.

I guess on thing to remember for those not in attendance most of the first half the 1's played against the 2's. So SR threw against the 2's and GR and JL threw against the 1's or 2's. Second half 1's played the 1's, but SR only played one series then I believe.

Again so hard to tell because the offense is so basic and vanilla.

Spring games favor the defense big time. The offense is really limited to certain plays and the defense knows this. For example zone read was barely run today because of the no tackling on the QB's. By the time the spring game happens the defense can cheat and guess what play is coming. I think it was either my sophomore or junior year spring game I lead the game in tackles, not because I was the best LB on the team but because I was able to guess correctly and get to my spots quicker than if I had to play it honestly.

With all that being said I still think the DL and LB's will be greatly improved over prior year.

Well if your coaching expertise at football is as great as your basketball insight, I'm sure we all will be enlightened by the end of the season.

The number 2 offense looked good.
The number 2 defense looked good.

Not great signs

Appreciate your perspective and that makes sense. The eye test for our d-line has certainly improved and I'm sure the defense will too. I was hoping to see a little more out of our running game, especially Warren, but like you said, the D has a big advantage. I'm a little concerned that our running backs still aren't very big and I don't think Brown and Warren are as explosive as Nealy, but they are slightly bigger. Syria has better size but of course he didn't play. I liked what Lanning did, showing pretty good accuracy, especially going against the first team most of the time. Hard to tell a whole lot from the spring game.

Actually, if that were true it would be a GREAT sign that we finally have some excellent depth. And depth has probably been our greatest shortcoming these past two seasons.

Actually the game started with ones against ones and then they started switching Players around after that.

That is the way I heard it also.

It was No. 1 Offense versus the No. 1 Defense.

And it was No. 2 Offense versus No. 2 Defense.

And then they made substitutions and mixed things around. It wasn't really a game.

Ya several schools (I think all but ISU in the Big 12) have their spring games televised. Would have been a stellar marketing ploy for the SEZ.

Slight derailment, but on ESPNU this morning, they said Neb. Had over 76000 attending their spring game.

You really can't imagine how obsessed these people are until you live here and experience it 24x7x365
That's all they think about. If WWIII broke out last Friday the first words out of their mouths would have been "Are the Huskers still going to play the spring game"?
