Bowl or Bust

It appears he has an opinion about ISU football and expressed it. Why does it need to be more than that?

If you do not have my best interests in mind then WHY should I take your advice? Section does not want what is best for Iowa State football. He is a Hawkeye.

So you would be pleased with the entire staff leaving.

It'd be easier to hire a football coach after an 8 win season than a 2 win season.

If a coach succeeds at ISU and moves on, that is a GOOD THING. I wish everyone success on their career path. Its better to have a coach for 5 years be successful, and continue his career in whatever way he choses, than to be stuck with a bad one for 10.

Gene Chizik is responsible for much of the success CPR gets credit for.

The reality is that beyond being a good motivator (for players and fans alike) CPR has not demonstrated any qualities required for running a successful program. He hasn't recruited well. He hasn't hired a quality staff. His game management and in game decisions have been questionable at best.

Name a self respecting football program in America that would stand with a coach with CPR's record. Name a football coach in America who has had success after posting the kind of results CPR has had the last several years. I don't care that his job is hard. If he can't be successful he needs to go.

BS on the Gene Chizik comment. Complete BS.

Oregon.........Rich Brooks.......won 4 games total in years 5 and 6. Hmmmmmm.......I guess that would be worse than CPR's record wouldn't it?

And in his 7th year, Rich Brooks won 4 games.

Congrats on your failed 8th post.

This stuff is why he should have been gone last year IMO. Next year we get 5 wins then he stays, and for what, to barely make a bowl game. I just don't see us getting much better than a 4-5 and occasional bowl team under him. So why drag it out, I know the likelihood that we do a Baylor turnaround isn't good, but can we at least pretend to try. It should be this difficult to put together a team that can consistently get to 8 wins and, most importantly, be competitive in all our games.

Maybe you should go take a peek at our historical records in football, count the number of 8 win seasons (i.e., 5 since 1968), and then come back and pontificate how it shouldn't be hard to consistently field 8-win teams. That is not a realistic expectation or perspective at this point in time.

C'mon. It is simple. We fans need to simply DEMAND that we win 8 games in a season and it is magically done.

No one is talking about demanding 8 wins. I'm saying it should be a goal we aspire to and our program should be showing progress towards that goal. Explain to me how we've made that progress 7 years in.

holy hell stormin... how the hell did you sit through the Chizik years... Paul Rhoads is NOT a good football coach, we should not be wining 2 and 3 games in his 5th and 6th years. Year 7 would be his second recruiting cycle of 4 year players. Recruiting is abysmal...
Coaching is downright pathetic, (Paul has no balls anymore. ie. onside kicks and going for it on 4th and inches from the 2 yard line... instead. kicking the fieldgoal.

This, obviously this. The opposite is so mind numbingly laughably stupid. A coach that came to ISU and won 8 games in year 3 or 4 and left to go to Texas or USC would be a godsend. It would arguably be the best thing to happen to ISU in the history of the program.

This arguing point is so insulting to Iowa State University. Really frustrates me that our own fans use that excuse to rip our institution's ability to be successful.

I don't think the argument is that we can't get anyone better. I think the argument is that if we do make a change, it will likely be a flyer on some up and coming coach from FCS-level or a coordinator that has yet to prove himself as a head coach at this level. If said coach is successful, he will likely be wooed by higher profile programs, and our success will be short-lived short of then subsequently hitting on another up and coming coach. With our current budget restrictions and football prestige, hiring an established BCS-level football coach with a history of success is unrealistic. That says nothing about the university as a whole, it is merely being realistic about our place in the BCS level football pecking order. ISU is an exceedingly hard place to be successful in football because of all of the historic and geographic disadvantages.

This is why so many of us want to give Rhoads every opportunity to succeed. He is a local guy, and the chances of him leaving after having success are smaller than an outsider coming in with no ties to the University or the area. It is similarly why so many people are apprehensive about Hoiberg leaving for the NBA...there is no guarantee that we'll get someone close to his caliber that is likely to stay if success continues.

Every single player on ISU's roster in CPR's first two years was brought in by Chizik. Look at the record.

If CPR doesn't win 5 games this year, the staff should be gone and we should back up a truckload of $$ for Greg Schiano. He's won before at a program MUCH worse than ISU.

So you would have fired Rich Brooks......who won 2 games in his 5th season and 2 games in his 6th season, and 4 games in his 7th season. And ended up coaching Oregon for 18 years.

Silly Oregon named their football field after Rich Brooks in 1995. Those silly Ducks.

BS on your first comment. David Sims was voted Defensive newcomer of the Year in the Big 12........he was a CPR recruit. Great safety. No way we win without him. Arnaud and ARob were DMac recruits. Yes CPR had a lot of players that were not his recruits that first year. But he had some decent success meaning he knows how to coach. And our schedule that first year was fairly easy playing in the Big 12 North Division and avoiding Texas and Oklahoma that season.

At least get your facts straight. You are not a good "mentor".

Every program goes through ebbs and flows. Every. Single. One. It's just a matter of degree. Our ceiling is 8 wins, our floor is 2-3 wins. Right now, we are in an ebb. If the team doesn't show improvement this year, I agree we need to do something. However, to expect we will never have another 2 or 3 win season is just not realistic.

Holy hell there are some people in here that are not playing with anywhere close to full decks.

Thanks for giving us the one example in the history of college football. Now, examine every other coach in history who has had as bad of years 5 and 6 as CPR.

Why do we have to limit ourselves to years 5 and 6? Wouldn't years 7, 8 or beyond be just as germane to the discussion?

Also, can we determine bad years as a matter of degree? For example, a bad season at Alabama may be a good season, if not a great season, at Iowa State. Or do we have to use absolute 2-3 win numbers to determine a bad season?
