Second half clinic: Outstanding movement, shot selection, and decision making

You mention leaving McKay being left in as a mistake. I think Fred leaves him in as a confidence-builder. There will be more games like the OK State game that we won't win if he doesn't make his ft's.

Fred was rotating McKay on defense with Matt for offense late in the game. Sometimes it wasn't possible to get McKay off the floor before he was hacked.

I thought it was a good assessment until the last paragraph. Also disagree with morris doing a poor job of containing Taylor. I think it was more Taylor making plays.

Excellent call out on the FTs. I went back and looked, and we did really well outside the stretch in which we missed 3 in a row. Sometimes things stick out that skew one's perception.

As for the 2nd point, I don't think McKay should EVER be in the game when the other team is in foul mode. That's a situation to put ball handlers and FT shooters on the floor. Put Naz, Nader, Niang, Morris, and Thomas on the floor. Once they get fouled you sub McKay and Hogue back into the game. Hoiberg has been very inconsistent with these types of subsitutions and I have a hard time figuring out why.

McKay has been strides in his FT shooting, but he and McKay can't be in the game after made baskets/Fts. IMO, these have been opportunities (in the past) in which Fred has had the chance to use TOs and optimize his roster with offense/defense substitions.

on the FTs, you can't look at the overall % and say we shot it well. Sure, 75% is good and it helped us win the game. But you have to look at the timing of the misses too. The misses at the time they were missed allowed Texas to stay in the game. Heck, we could have really put it out of reach sooner had we didn't miss a few earlier in the game(before the final 3:40). So to say FT shooting is not an issue is not true. It still is an issue. With that said, the team is playing well enough in other areas to compensate for it. Lets just hope the FT shooting doesn't bite us in the butt when it matters most, tournament time.

on top of that, Taylor stuck his opposite arm out and was clearing like crazy. How the refs let him do that time and time again and not call it is beyond me. It puts the defender in a heck of a pickle. If you D up hard on him, there is going to be contact because you are going to hit the clearing arm, the way the refs were calling the contact, it favored Taylor. So they had to ease off a little to avoid making contract with his clearing arm in which case Taylor got easier looks. If the officials would call on offensive foul on when he sticks his arm out and holds the defender off with it, then maybe we could have guarded him harder.

Those are the plays that define good offense in Hoiberg's system. Unselfish and in rhythm. Georges is coming around and starting to see he doesn't have to force things. Also helps to have Hogue and Thomas as other outside threats besides Naz. Beautiful basketball today. I was impressed with our defensive positioning too although I suspect that has more to do with poor guard play from Texas.

Exactly. And where earleir in the year, when they would occassionally panic and start ****ing the bed, NONE of that at all yesterday. Just relax and take what they give you.

Confidence to be patient knowing you will score, vs confidence you will score so go for it right now.
