"It's not the coach that I hate or the players; it's Iowa State," Vandervelde said at the time. "It's the entity that they are. It's the whole rivalry. I was raised an Iowa kid, and no matter what happens, I'm probably always going to hate Iowa State no matter who they're playing and who their coach is."
"It's a big deal for our team," he added. "I know a lot of people like to think it's kind of a bigger deal for (the Cyclones), but we have quotes up all over place. It's a statement game for them ... But we've got a statement to make, too."

Julian Vandervelde seemed to be pretty fired up about the game when he played. His comment about having quotes up all over the place leads me to believe it was a pretty big deal to the rest of the team as well. The hawk coaches and players never seem to downplay the importance of this rivalry yet the fans act like they couldn't give a **** less. If it's just another game for the hawks, why do they run to the trophy looking all sorts of giddy when they win? The players care plenty about this game but a lot of the fans have some weird elitist mentality for whatever reason.
The fact is this is a huge game regardless of how good/bad either team is. If you live in Iowa, odds are you're either an Iowa State or iowa fan. Everybody looks forward to this game all year whether they want to admit it or not. Having to listen to the rival fans run their mouths for an entire year is almost unbearable for either fan base. This is a fun rivalry that everybody SHOULD be excited about. If you're not, Tony Moeaki thinks there's something wrong with you.
“Coming in as a freshman, it definitely was an eye opener,” Moeaki said. “It was pretty nuts.
“There’s something wrong with you if you’re not up for this one.”

My response was to CyTwins, with some weird reverse psychology he's trying to display by saying it's now Iowa's Super Bowl.
I'm not saying the games not important to both sides , but obviously it's more important to Iowa State because they're not now and haven't been a competitor in their conference or in contention to play in a BCS game. .. Regarding your quotes, 2 players is a pretty small sample size but obviously the media wants to hype up the rivalry and when they get asked a question would you expect them to downplay it?
Again, it's still a rivalry game so it matters to both teams. BUT for the most part cyclone football seasons always end pretty disappointingly so this game provides a silver lining if they win...
