Des Moines is not Cyclone territory.

Well, okay. 2nd person on this. It isn't Hawkeye territory either then, ISU is the closest large school with a big fanbase in DSM/WDSM is all I am describing.

I guess I'll just call it Drake Bulldog territory to be politically correct for everyone on here. I wasn't trying to slight them I know they are here...Next I'll have to say Ankeny isn't Cyclone territory either because Simpson or Grandview is technically closer or something (I don't know and don't care.)

In my opinion you don't have a slap fight with opponents below your station.

Is that what you think Iowa was doing? j/w

I apologize if it came off wrong but I wasn't trying to propose the question "Should ISU hold a spring practice in Eastern Iowa?" as just some response to what Iowa has already done. I meant it more as if the roles were reversed and ISU was the one holding the game in a city closer to U of I like Cedar Rapids to give our fanbase nearby a chance to watch the team - would you be for it, against it, or indifferent.

I have no doubt that they scheduled their practice at Valley to take some media attention away from us. But, instead of just copying them and having a football practice amongst the trailer parks in Eastern Iowa I say we have a non-con (exhibition type)basketball game there. Neutral court type of game ought to be fairly easy to arrange. In fact with the right opponent it could be a mens/womens doubleheader assuming there is enough interest. All of the Iowans that drove to KC on short notice were not from Ames & Des Moines. I believe there are many Iowans who would love to see the Cyclones in person. If it ruffled the tail feathers of a few crows out east tough ****.

If we held it somewhere in eastern Iowa on the day of Iowa's spring game, we'd get a few hundred people and Iowa fans would laugh at us.

I say keep doing what we're doing. We get good crowds for our spring game and our marketing department is doing a good job of keeping our brand in front of all Iowans.

Just got back from having to spend two days in the Quad Cities. Sorry QC Clones but teh hoks can keep them. The amount of Illinois and Western Illinois jackets covering hok T-shirts covering saggy boob tats was really confusing. Throw the Nascar hats and WWE hats on top to complete the ensemble and I was just having laffy time all weekend.

When you are the big dog in the state like iowa state university is you dont have to stoop to these gimmicks to get fans.

Let little brother try to gain back a foothold... the trains already left the building and iowa is in panic mode. LoL

You realize we're talking about football now, right?

While in thought I'm totally with you on the idea of securing more Western Iowans (and it would be great to keep people from cheering for Nebraska.) Besides not being as populated, I don't think these type of things are really there to "sway" fans one way or the other. It's more for where your fans already are. I don't think ISU in CR would be any more or less "going into the lion's den" than Iowa in DSM. I don't think Iowa's spring practice was competing for fans with ISU's Spring Game on any significant level.

It keeps getting closer and closer to 50/50 in Western Iowa. The coattail Nebraska fans are getting to be fewer and fewer and the younger fans are taking ISU as their team or school at a higher percentage than in the past. As long as Fred keeps the basketball program rolling that rate will speed up. There are so many non fans or kind of Iowa fans that watched this ISU team play and got hooked on them.

Des Moines is not Cyclone territory.

The gap is closing between Iowa and ISU fans in the area. There is so much more ISU gear being worn now than there was 10 years ago even 5 years ago. Like I said before the Basketball program is growing the popularity of ISU athletics, with young fans, fans that didn't follow sport much in the past, and fringe Iowa fans. It has also awaking some old ISU fans.

Des Moines is the home media market for ISU also, just like Cedar Rapids is the home media market for Iowa.

None of this stuff is measurable. It's all wishful thinking. You see what your heart wants you to see. If someone can show me a study that proves ISU is gaining more fans than Iowa is or Iowa is losing more fans than ISU is than I'd believe it. Until then it's just purely wishful thinking on both parts.

When ISU has a run like they have in basketball you see more people wearing ISU shirts for awhile. The same goes for Iowa when they put together a good season in football. That's because those fringe fans jump on the bandwagons for awhile because they don't really care either way. The true fans never change their allegiance, and the truth is Iowa has always had more true fans in the state of Iowa than ISU.

With that said, I do think it would be a good idea for ISU to hold a practice in CR. The only problem with it is people will say "ISU is just copying Iowa". I'm not sure if that matters to some of you or not. As tm said before, I think it's a win/win for Iowa having the practice in WDM. It pleases fans who are from this area because they can see the product without having to travel very far, and the timing of it just happens to get under the skin of ISU. ISU could accomplish the exact same thing by doing this in Eastern Iowa. I don't see what it would hurt.

This is a really messed up relationship Iowa State and Iowa share with randomly getting older than the other one in fall, just to have the other getting older in January. Then in April they return to the same age. This is f-ed up man :jimlad:

I think this is true and false. I don't think they said, hey let's crash ISU spring game by holding an open practice at Valley on the same day at basically the same time. I think they decided they wanted to do an open practice in WDM just because it's good to give fans a chance to see the team besides the spring game, and the central location gives fans who might not want to make the trip to IC a shorter drive to see the team in the spring.

That said, I don't think it's a coincidence that the practice is held on the same day. If I were in Barta's/Ferentz's shoes, I'd probably say, well we're going out that way anyway; might as well run interference on ISU while we're at it.

Short version-this is as Micky Mouse as it gets.

Basically there's no reason to still be mad about an ISU billboard almost a decade ago. I see them as pretty comparable.

Exactly... It's an in-state rivalry. Clearly the head coaches are professional enough to have respect for each other, but outside of that there is no reason to play nice. Pollard has made some moves to intentionally rile up the U of I, and the U of I has done some things in return. Is it childish? Sure it is, but it's also kinda funny.
