Honestly, I think going west might not be a bad idea for ISU. Neither school has a commanding grip on fans in the western half of the state (Nebraska has more of a presence, though), which is a lot different than trying to go into the lion's den, so to speak.

While in thought I'm totally with you on the idea of securing more Western Iowans (and it would be great to keep people from cheering for Nebraska.) Besides not being as populated, I don't think these type of things are really there to "sway" fans one way or the other. It's more for where your fans already are. I don't think ISU in CR would be any more or less "going into the lion's den" than Iowa in DSM. I don't think Iowa's spring practice was competing for fans with ISU's Spring Game on any significant level.

I selfishly want it just so I can hear all the douches in CR whine about ISU encroaching on their territory. It drives me nuts that ISU makes so little effort to engage the fan base here. The billboard was awesome, but that was years ago. The tailgates are great. But they are 1 day year and when it's over, we get little to nothing. No advertising, no effort to remain visible.

When the local Cyclone clubs were disbanded by the university, we were told that ISU would be coordinating events themselves, but outside of alumni game watches at a freaking Iowa-themed restaurant, we don't see anything.

As far as bang for the AD's buck goes, I'm sure it make more sense to try and capture a bigger share of the Des Moines market than try to chase fans in Iowa's backyard. Sucks when you live in that part of the state, but it does make sense.

They may not be intended to sway fans one way or the other, but that doesn't mean they might not work for that. It definitely wouldn't be effective for ISU going east or Iowa coming to DSM; those are areas where the schools already have strong bases. But out west, you might get more would-be Nebraska fans just by giving them more of an alternative. I would think western Iowans would be more willing to cheer for either state school if there wasn't such a virtual disconnect between the western third of the state and everybody else.

They should do it at Xavier's stadium so that it would look more impressive with an overflow crowd

Before they schlep east for practice, I think a higher priority should be radio coverage. The fact that you can barely pull in the games in some parts of eastern Iowa is mind-boggling to me. I may be the only person left who listens to games on the radio occasionally but it seems there shouldn't be a square inch anywhere in Iowa where you can't pull it in (Iowa or ISU, for that matter).

I'm not arguing against that. But you realize that they already do. The weekly DSM meetings and the local television/radio stations advertising games for a start. I think you under-estimate the presence already there in DSM. Conversely, there is little to no presence in eastern Iowa. I'm not asking for a huge media budget, but how about advertising for upcoming games? How about some generic billboards around town? These are things that don't take a ton of effort/dollars, but they maintain an identity in the area.

This is very true, and it was ROUGH when I lived out in Waterloo. It's probably less of an issue now with the better TV coverage, but it would still be nice to consistently get games on the radio waves through the whole state. There's a project for an secret CF millionaires, just buy up eastern and western Iowa radio stations and force Cyclone coverage on them.

We'd be better off trying to secure the western side of the state like it would be if football hadn't dropped off for two decades. When I was a kid in Sioux City in the 80s it was 60/30/10 Iowa/Neb/ISU, today it's more like 50/30/20 Iowa/ISU/Neb, but ISU should be the 50.

Hoiball will help, but for one year it would be cool, or maybe even play a basketball game there against one of the smaller nebraska or dakota schools.

It still boggles my mind that the Cedar Rapids radio outlet for the Cyclones (KGYM), in addition to carrying the Iowa State games, also has pre- and post-game shows for the Hawkeyes. Yep, they produce and broadcast pregame and postgame shows for games they can't even carry. Talk about Hawk-centric eastern Iowa.

Does Iowa even do a spring game? I thought the WDM and IC events were both open practices which is pretty lame.

I don't begrudge KGYM or any other eastern Iowa station any of their Hawk talk, it is right in the backyard. But between the 3 KGYM channels, you still can't get ISU games very well, particularly at night.

Let Pollard know ...

BTW, Iowa must really feel threatened by how the worm is turning in the state by crashing ISU's scrimmage. Remember, these are the genius types who try to normalize housing gate, the rhabdo burn, and contacting ISU opponents about security issues at Jack Trice .., only to find out it was a hawkster who committed the crime spree. Way to go Hawks!

There are far more Hawk fans in the DSM area then there are Cyclone fans in Eastern Iowa. No need for ISU to copy what the Hawks decided to do. Iowa made this move in response to ISU's gaining of popularity. ISU does not need to change what its currently doing.

I think ISU should hold a practice in western Iowa more so than eastern Iowa, and I live in se iowa. Much more to gain in western Iowa.

Agree with last few sentences. Iowa state is definitely gaining popularity state wide. I continually see more and more cyclone paraphernalia here in hok country. I think u of I is doing all they can to keep the fans they have.
