One thing we clearly need to work on is defending the 3 point line. Iowa State has given up the most 3 pointers in the league and is dead last in 3 pt % defense.

We've been rebounding well lately at least. We pretty much got stomped all around last night, but I think we've been soundly beaten at the 3 point line in about every game we've lost.

Just one of those games. Uggh.

Perfect storm. ISU couldn't hit one and West Virginia couldn't miss. When people talk about regression to the mean, I don't think that is what they have in mind.

Agree on the perfect storm-

I think it was more WVU just going off from behind the arc and ISU having an off night from behind the arc. Maybe attribute it to some weak legs from having to travel that distance and playing short rest (I realize they had the same amount of rest and travel but they also got to sleep in their own beds)? Maybe just an off night in general. I don't think we see that lopsided of a shooting performance the rest of the year. I do like the fact that we out-rebounded them by 10 last night and almost had more ORB's than they did DRB's.

That's a product of
a) double teaming the post and the ball reversal being quicker than we can recover running across the floor to the corner guy
b) Long/Thomas/Kane/etc. having to sag in so much so they don't get killed off the dribble

Most teams double down to help the post. Maybe the double is coming from a different spot on the floor depending upon the team but for the most part, you see a lot of doubles down low. I think the guards sagged so much last night due to the quickness of WVU's guards (as someone already mentioned).

The announcers kept talking about ISU not covering WVU's shooters on 3's - mostly true. They also kept talking about WVU's great defense on the 3 point line - not as much true. ISU had a ton of good looks, many of them open, and just simply couldn't knock them down. WVU earned and deserved the win. They hit their shots at an incredible pace. They played good defense but I really think the announcers over blew WVU's defense. They were physical in the interior and had hands all over the perimeter. The new rules and points of emphasis do not apply in Morgantown. That is what you get everytime you play a Huggins team. ISU did not handle it well at all. That is the closest I have seen Fred to a technical in quite a few games.

We're an offensive team, that's just the way it's going to be. WVU shot out of their minds from all over, we shot terribly and has an assload of turnovers. Any team that shoots 50+% from the field and nearly 60% from 3 is going to be damn hard to beat.

Staten is really, really hard to keep in front of. I think that had our defense scrambling all over the place and opened up just about everything. Not saying we couldn't have done some things better.

A shot blocker would really help against a guy like Staten because it's pretty much a given that he is going to beat you off the dribble. Hopefully McKay and maybe Malou can give us that on defense.

Several of those 3's that Dibo buried were guarded pretty well. Not much you can do when people shoot lights out like that. I thought the interior defense was abysmal TBH.

3 point defense, R U kidding me. Last nite we had NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO defense of any kind and like Fred sez, "If we keep playing like this, we wont win another game"......

I agree, we either come back and blow Tx Tech out of our bldg, or we go the other way.....

Go Clones Lets Go State and Bury the Bums from Lubbock!!

I said something similar in another thread. We also are very concerned with foul trouble, so Ejim and Niang do not close out real aggressively either, and neither are long enough to give deter much in there, especially if they are struggling to close out.

I know it is said that 3 pt % defense is more luck (akin to FT% defense). But 11 games in, we're last place in % def AND total 3 pters attempted against and made. And team after team has their season high against us. Hard to ignore that after a while.

Leave people open, they make shots. It's true with our guys, true with the other team. Though like previously said, the French guy that was making everything was making them even when guarded well.

What would you rather give up, a layup and possible foul, or a 3pt shot? I would take the 3pt shot all day long.

I have been on board with this strategy all year long. Just seems like it's burned us quite a bit in conference play is all. Let all their guys shoot it, except their best 1 or 2 guys, but make it a tougher shot would be my hope.

Pretty much this. Too many times I have come on here after games to here people talking about how the other team just shot out of their minds, in games we have won and lost. After a while, the sample size gets big enough that it is hard to write this off as coincidence or bad luck. We give up a lot of good lucks from behind the arc, it isn't a surprise at all that teams are knocking those down.
