HyVee fuel saver card

Reasons why I like Hy-Vee (some of these apply to Fareway as well)

#1 About 20% of the people I know worked at Hy-Vee in high school or college. It's a great learning experience for kids. It may also make you quickly realize that you hate retail.

#2 If you've moved about anywhere in the country one of the things you miss is Hy-Vee. You probably won't admit it but spend a few months shopping at Jewel or Safeway and then get back to me.

#3 Employee owned-It does mean something particularly for the full timers.

#4 About once every 5 years some big store comes along that's going to kick Hy-Vee's ***. Remember Food Saver? Remember how Super Wal-mart, Target, Whole Foods, etc we're all going to bankrupt Hy-Vee? I don't know about your but my Hy-Vee's shopping lot is filled day and night.

#5 As far as I know the Store managers are paid on commission. Your store loses money, you lose money. There are no shortcuts to Store Manager although it helps to be female. They don't hire Store managers from competitors off the street. Most every store manager started from the bottom.

#6 Headquartered in Iowa but is the best everywhere it competes.

#7 Even though the ideas often fail, they try some goofy things. Luxury clothes in a grocery store..Why not give it a shot?

#8 They are in a lot of small towns

#9 If I talk the right person they will carry a new item that they don't currently carry.

#10 More than 2 people in a line and they call another one to check you out. If they run out of people don't be surprised to see an assistant manager checking you out.

#11 Gas card ******* !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go try out Giant Eagle if you're in Western PA or Eastern Ohio sometime. It is exactly like Hy-Vee but the prices are better in my opinion. They don't smile as much as Hy-Vee but I can deal with that.

Top 3 grocery stores across the country in my opinion and experience:

1.) Publix (BY A MILE)
2.) Giant Eagle
3.) Hy-Vee

I would like to know also. Casey's is pretty much the only place I buy gas if I can help it.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the Top Tier Gas program. I don't know if I quite believe it or not, but get a gallon of Casey's gas and get a gallon of Quicktrip gas, and look at them side by side. There is a noticeable difference, even visually.

Top Tier Fuels are recommended by most manufacturers. And are priced the same as everything else in town.

Not understanding the logic here. Who says it's something they didn't need?

Just taking a look at this weeks ad I see yogurt, pork chops, tomatos, mushrooms, carrots, ground chuck, tomato soup, chicken noodle soup, pasta sauce, toilet paper, cat litter, etc

You do understand that you can pick and choose which items to buy right?

My assumption is they are purchasing WELL above their needs just to save the money on gas. I'm not saying they don't need it, but the question is would they buy it if it wasn't a fuel saver?

People do weird things when you put a sale tag under an item. Used to work at Hy Vee in Dubuque. They would normally sell a pint of half and half for 48 cents, and would go through about 30 a day. Hy Vee corporate would always throw those pints in an ad at a sale price of 2 for $1.00. Of course, they would change their price to reflect the sale price, and you could barely keep them on the shelf.

I don't care about Top Tier, in fact I think it's kind of a scam but that's a topic for a different day.

I believe most brand-name gasolines have superior detergent additives to generic brands and, right or wrong, paying a few cents extra gives me peace of mind.

I get at least 4 miles a gallon more when I fill at a Shell station than when I fill at HyVee, Casey's, Kwik Star, etc...

Never been to Giant Eagle but I agree on Publix from what I've seen.

Another thing worth mentioning.. before this program hyvee used to have a discount on gas just for showing your receipt from the store at the gas station. That's gone away with this.

Yeah, it used to be $.05/gal for a $50 receipt, $.07/gal if you hit $100 and $.10/gal if you hit $150, IIRC.

Or at least, that was the program immediately preceding this one.

At the Wine and Spirits/Drug Store in CR, you receive $.20 off per gallon if you spend 20 bucks on Sundays. Not hard to run in, buy a case of beer and some chips or something and save $.20 every Sunday.

I actually avoid the Ankeny Hy-Vee because they never have enough checkout lanes open when I'm there (and sometimes they're all open and it's still not enough).

I don't do much shopping at HyVee because the stores now cost upwards of $20 million apiece. I understand coolers/freezers can be expensive but when 75% of your store should be metal shelves, something is wrong.

They have to recoup those costs somehow (by charging more) and I'm not going to contribute that much to it.
HyVee's in my opinion are over diversifying but it gets people in the doors.
I can be in an out of Fareway/Aldi's a lot quicker and cheaper for most things.

And that program was only at stores with a fuel station - meaning only stores with a fuel station could offer it. The program now means every HyVee customer can benefit from the program, not just those with a fuel station.

Based on your example to save 10 cents I needed to spend $100, whereas yesterday I bought 10 cartons of yogurt for $5.00 and got 10 cents off per gallon. I'll take spending $5.00 to get 10 cents vs spending $100 to get the same any day of the week.

Yeah, the new program is hands down better.
