HyVee fuel saver card

My wife is addicted to the gas card. She sometimes buys things that we normally don't eat but we've never thrown anything out so I'm not worried about it.

As far as who is cheaper, it really depends on where you shop and what you buy. If you stick strictly to the grocery aisles and buy name brands, things average themselves out among grocery stores. People tend to spend more money at Hy-Vee then Fareway because you can actually buy good stuff. I've yet to find a fareway or Wal-mart where I can pick up a sixer of Bell's two hearted. I've witnessed actual price comparisons between stores and they can go from Hy-Vee being the cheapest to Fareway to Wal-Mart and is even different from store to store (saw that a lot at Fareway). The only thing I saw on a constant basis was that Dahl's was the most expensive but even then we're talking 2%. If you're really worried about prices your best bet is to stop worrying about where you shop and focus on how you shop. Bringing along 2 coupons can offset the prices of any grocery store in the metro.

I have paid $1.30 a gallon before. Fuel saver is a great deal but only if you are smart about it. You have to take into consideration how much of 20 gallon maximum you will use. Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids had a loaf of french bread for $2.19 with .20 off per gallon up to 20 gallons. If you have a truck with a big tank like mine and use the entire 20 gallons, you are getting $4 off your gas purchase for an item that cost $2.19 so it is a great deal for that. Check Hy-Vee drugstores too. The one off Blairs Ferry in CR has fuel saver sundays which if you spend $20 store wide, you get .20 off per gallon so that is a pretty decent deal. But not everything that Hy-Vee marks with fuel saver is a good deal. Other things may be like buy Hy-Vee brand frozen pizza for $3 and get .01 off per gallon. If you fill up that's only .20 off so that crappy off brand pizza was really $2.80 so that isn't that great of a deal. But besides that you can rack up fuel saver really quickly on stuff you actually do need. Hope this helps! I really enjoy fuel saver!

If you follow Hy-Vee on Facebook, you will see them constantly put out pictures of people who paid under 50 cents a gallon. I always laugh, because I know they spent over $100 on groceries then didn't need just to save $50 in gas.

I rarely buy anything that isn't on fuel saver that week at HyVee. Before I got my fuel saver card, I would maybe shop there twice a year. Most things are less expensive elsewhere. As several have said, you have to use a minimal amount of common sense to make it beneficial to you. Don't buy things you don't need just for the savings and don't buy things that might be over priced that you DO need just to get 1 cent off a gallon of gas. Some items just aren't priced right, compared to the gas discount, to make it worth spending your money in the first place.

Once a week, I will go through each aisle of the store and see what there is for the fuel saver sale. I literally only look for the red tags on the shelves. Some weeks I will spend maybe 10 bucks, but others maybe 30. It took decades, but they at least figured out a way to get me in the door more than twice a year. Otherwise, I do most shopping at Fareway, or Dahl's or Small-mart if I need just one or two things (since they're closest to my house).

Shop at the most expensive grocery store around to save money on gas, no thanks Jeff.

I've paid as little as $1.19. Some stores do promos, anniversary sales, and in store promos. I only buy what I would normally buy and usually that is all I go to Hy Vee for. Plus my wife lives in Coralville ( I live in Johnston; it's complicated) so she buys groceries on my card too. The other key is I have an F150 so I always get 20 gallons, it's just not every week. I usually wait until I have around $1 on it before I cash in.

I got $3.21 discount/gallon one week. Mostly because their system was jacked and gave me double credit. When my wife started working outside of home and since I work at home I started doing the grocery shopping. It became a bit of a competition for me to figure out what was a deal and what wasn't. I've never bought what I wouldn't have. The best was around July 4th. 4-12 packs for $9, plus 20 cents a gallon discount per four 12 packs.

The first few months seemed to be much better deals. Now they appear to be jacking the price up to account for the discount. I take in a full 20 gallons, so I don't have to do that math on top of it all.

Not understanding the logic here. Who says it's something they didn't need?

Just taking a look at this weeks ad I see yogurt, pork chops, tomatos, mushrooms, carrots, ground chuck, tomato soup, chicken noodle soup, pasta sauce, toilet paper, cat litter, etc

You do understand that you can pick and choose which items to buy right?

About a month ago, my girlfriend paid about $15 for 12 gallons of gas. Here in Storm Lake and other small cities, the deals are a lot better than the bigger cities. For example, there was a coupon in the add for 75 cents off a gallon if you spend $75.

I'm sure a few people occasionally come out ahead on this but Hy-vee didn't start this program to help customers and not make money.

Another thing worth mentioning.. before this program hyvee used to have a discount on gas just for showing your receipt from the store at the gas station. That's gone away with this.

Any statement that says Hy-Vee is the most expensive grocery store is false and you don't grocery shop very much. The correct answer by a mile is: Dahl's.

Oh yeah, I wish I could get 3 cents per gallon just by showing my receipt again...

i shop at hyvee but it annoys me that one day burgers will be 3 for $5 and the next day they'll be $2.50 each. The day before a softball tournament here packages of brats went from $3.19 to $4.59 and then back down the following monday.

i guess i pay too much attention at hyvee!
