Rhoads and Recruiting

You want to change the landscape, go donate T Boone Pickens money so they can upgrade everything to that level, pay some players to come up for a few years and pray you don't get caught.
The unrealistic nature of these posts boggles my mind. I would like to see a strong program come out of this, but I understand that as long as ISU gets better players year after year, it's bound to happen. Patience or go do something about it.

Money is the long term answer. Money can replace courtney messingham and reverse this inevitable train wreck.

Unfortunate set of events. Part of our problem, a perfect storm ( o-line) during an expected rebuilding year. We sell more tickets than ever largely based on enthusiasm and promptly crap it down our pants leg.We only have two options revert to who we were or continue to support the program. I think CPR has taken the right approach and not thrown anyone under the bus. The burning question is how long before we develop an O-line that is serviceable. I think team has enough skill talent but glaring holes as well.

And yet we're still dead last on offense in the B12 and nearly last for all of FBS. Never been close to a winning record in conference.

If you are going to compare to the conference how about putting up ISU's recruiting classes' conference rankings. It will tell you a pretty good reason why ISU hasn't been able to win half their games in the conference.

No one can win in a low population, talent, and terrible climate. Signed, Boise state.

Stop posting stupid crap. 9 wins last year, 8 the year before, a 5 win season before that, and 13 wins and a national title appearance in 2009. There is only one"Rhoadsesque" season there. Guess which one it is?

Could Mack Brown do more? Sure. Is he doing less than Paul Rhoads? Look at the wins, and stop being dumb.

This is the most ridiculous post I have ever seen. Mack Brown does not make the Texas football team, his ASSISTANTS DO! Look at what has gone on at Texas and the Assistants there. Mack Brown has had some of the best assistants in the CFB and that has given him good teams. See attached website for your review:

Mack Brown Coaching Tree

How many of these names have gone on to be head coaches or great assistants elsewhere. I am not saying the Mack Brown is not a good coach, but I believe that assistant coaches make the head coach. With that being said, MONEY does make a big difference. Am I saying we need to pay more money to our coaches probably not, but like mentioned earlier we are getting quite a bit out of our coach for the money we pay him.

Remember this is just my .02!

EDIT: Oh and as far as someone saying that our coaches only got Lazard because of legacy is ridiculous as well. He has mentioned that the only way he would change his mind to go to ND would be if drastic changes were made to the coaching staff. I guess he must like someone

Before I see the next thread complaining about our football recruiting, thought I might offer up a snapshot of where we are and have been....

While I would love see four star talent come into Ames, I don't think it's the main problem. Each of these classes were better than UNI's and they still beat us handily at home.

It is only the third time Rhoads lost a game he was favored to win. So don't act like he is an under-achiever.

Out of all the ********, this is the key post right here. What is his record in toss-ups? Upset percentage? I guarantee is is much higher than Chiz or DMac.

I'm REALLY down about this year, but we knew there would be a bump. Some of this has to do with burning redshirts early in his tenure. We'd look a lot better with Jake and AJ on D.

These last two games are the only ones for a long time where I have been disappointed in the effort and preparation (with the exception of play calling issues). I think changes need made in the coaching staff, but recruiting is heading in the right direction and we definitely have the right man in charge.

And the encouraging thing is how many young guys earned a spot on the field, many of which over upper classmen. If that doesn't indicate that ISU is recruiting over the current talent, I don't know what is.

I don't get the whole "it's year 5 for Rhoads" complaint.

As someone mentioned earlier in this thread - it's year 87 for Snyder @ K-State & they're fresh off an 11 win season & a trip to the Fiesta Bowl; yet they lost to NDSU to open the season.

And as CW mentioned on the podcast yesterday - Look at Iowa: won 11 games in 2009, including a BSC bowl win, & then went out and won 4 games last year in year 14 of Ferentz.

I agree we are recruiting a lot better than the past. The only problem I see is if we get ZERO wins or ONE win then that recruiting momentum will come to an immediate halt. The difference with the bumps in the road that other teams have like a KSU and Iowa is they don't drop down to the 0,1,2 win levels. Thats my main concern with this year.

Weird, ESPN seems to think recruiting is trending up :)
Big 12 2013 recruiting class rankings analysis for Sept. 18 - ESPN

I get people are tired of losing, and I don't think Messingham is the guy to change that. I just don't get the knock on recruiting. It seems to me we are getting a lot more guys with BCS offers than we have in the past.

We are trending up, some people just refuse to see it. They want an explanation for the lack of success that's more than "Messingham is bad and we have injuries." There isn't any more explanation than that. Recruiting is good enough to beat both UNI, and Iowa, and a lot of Big 12 teams. Defense is good enough to beat almost anyone in the country. Offense is bad primarily due to poor line play and poor play calling.

College football ebbs and flows in terms of overall strength, experience and schedule. We all know that. I think the staff was pointing to last year as a 'get over the hump' year where we could win 7 or 8 games. A totally jacked up QB situation (in which we had both guys with experience) and some rough defensive injuries prevented that, although we were pretty close despite the horrible QB play, pretty mediocre to poor OL play and key injuries down the stretch.

This year, we just don't have the experience across the board, so it was likely to be take some lumps and gain experience type of year, more of a setup for 2014. Find a way to 5-7 and lick your wounds, come back for a big 2014. Just don't take a giant step backwards. Unfortunately, it looks like we're going down a path. We've hit a bubble in the talent pipeline in a number of areas like LB, DL. The 2-deep on the OL has slowly eroded from what looked like solid, if not spectacular depth and then we lose our best OL in Farniok. We're just not to the point where we can absorb those kinds of things and cruise to 6 or 7 wins.

It's a possibility, but it hasn't happened yet so let the young guys develop and we may get 2+ good years out of these guys at a higher level. I am optimistic.

No, not that we shouldn't try. That we shouldn't ***** about it. It is getting better. But it will never be great.
"Never" is an AWFULLY long time.

By strange coincidence, I've been following football recruiting for an "awfully long time".

This statement simply isn't true. See the likes of Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss--which had a ludicrous recruiting class last season. Shoot, even Indiana has put up some nice results.

How many of those teams are getting great talent within the state?
