Official 2014 Recruiting thread

Yeah, it will take a quite a few years of equal or better success than Iowa to change the status quo. They seem to be cleaning up on most of the instate talent. Glad we got the prize though. Maybe if we cave their heads in this year, we can sway them to the light. Clouded by hok urine their judgment is.

We have to make the SEZ the next top priority IMO. I think our football facility and indoor practice facility is on par with or better than Iowa's right now.

But our stadium is far inferior IMO. I know I'll get ripped for not drinking the kool-aid and saying Jack Trice is better, but it just isn't even close. Tailgating for the fans is better at ISU IMO, but for the players, I think they'd much rather play in Kinnick than Jack Trice anyday.

Even with the SEZ, Jack Trice still would be inferior to Iowa, but it would be a lot better. Our new scoreboard still looks stupid IMO. Doesn't fit in at all. Looks like a sign over the interstate. Obviously better than what we had, but still looks stupid. If we do the SEZ right, which we won't now, but we'd do two levels and then mount our current scoreboard atop the 2nd level of the SEZ. But I'm positive that would never happen.

The whole entire NEZ right now is butt ugly. And the tunnel coming out right behind the support structure for the scoreboard doesn't help either. How we couldn't have made that thing come out right in the corner of that endzone is still beyond me. Someone said there were wires in the hillside or something? Really? Well, move them.

Sorry to turn this into a stadium rant. I just think we have a long ways to go in this area to compete for the best recruits. We don't look like a Big 12 football stadium IMO.

This is 100% right. Kinnick is showing its age big time, but, our stadium needs upgraded bad. No reason it can't be similar to a west Virgina or even TCU.

Iowa's phase 2 is going to put their facilities back ahead of ours too. Thats a war we are never going to win though. Their athletic budget is about 50mil higher than ours - per year. They also have a donor base that donates between 25-30 mil per year. Its like Ive said before - we need a law and medical school.

I don't think Render is going to be very good. I was never high on him and it didn't appear BCS coaches outside of Iowa were either. Certainly not a recruit that will make or break a class.

Is Matt Nelson leaning any way? Would love to see him leave the state!

Yeah, unfortunately you are correct. I don't think our stadium will ever be on par with Kinnick. We just don't have the money required.

But adding a 2 level SEZ would at least make us look like a BCS football stadium.

The biggest mistake we ever made was the Jacobsen building in the NEZ IMO. Sticking that in there, with that goofy roof on it, made it impossible to ever expand that endzone into either seating or more offices, etc.

Ever since then, it's just been a mess with no plan. Just a hodgepodge of ugliness. And because of this, we had to build our new football facility a good 100+ yds from the field. I would have liked it better to just make the entire NEZ our football facility, but it was impossible to integrate any new building with that hideous Jacobsen structure.

And because of the goofy roof on top of the Jake, we couldn't even mount our new scoreboard on top of it either. So we had to build this gigantic freeway sign over the top of it for it to work. And it just doesn't fit at all.

And now our guys have to walk a good 100 yds to the field through a tunnel, which is kinda cool, but then they come out right behind this gigantic structure for some stupid reason I'll never understand either. It's just all been botched from the start.

WV has the exact same stadium as we do, but they did their's correctly.

No, you'll get ripped because you think an endzone is the end all for recruiting. Do you really think a bunch of 17 year old kids give two ***** about the aesthetics of a stadium? Honestly I don't know why you even care. The purpose of a football of a football stadium is to hold a football field. As long as the field is there, who gives a **** beyond that.

Right now I would rather have packed hillsides than a half-full two level SEZ. Also, as of WVU I don't believe the players come out under the scoreboard anymore do they?

Too many engineers and not enough architects?

June 23, tomorrow, isn't that when Mr. Mister said he would announce his choice? Sunday . . . I must have the wrong date.

Will be interesting what the in state kids do when Iowa wins 3 games this year and fires Ferentz.

Funny many here seem to think kids care about Hilton Magic and its atmosphere in terms of deciding their college choice, but I'm sure you are right. I mean a football stadium only holds, what maybe 5-6 times more fans than bball? :skeptical:

I think that it doesn't necessarily matter how big the stadium is, but instead what the atmosphere is, and how loud the crowd is, which is good for both football and basketball.

This. Iowa is way too small of state to ever get 80K + consistently to Ames. Have being surrounded by Iowa and Nebby makes it that much worse. Knowing this, you can do a lot with a stadium that seats 50k. Minny just did this a few years ago. As I mentioned before, so did WV. Bowl in a very small lower level. Add some suites and outdoor consessions and kids stuff (games, whatever) to the top level. Would do wonders for the looks of JTS.

Who said anything about 80K? We're reaching for 60K already, and 70K is easily envisionable--especially if CPR stays here and keeps building over the next 10 or 20 years.

Oops...this is way off topic. Umm, the neat thing is, even 56K raucous crowds make a great impression on recruits.
